Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel filtration on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford filters the fuel in two stages on the 6.7L Powerstroke. A frame-mounted primary filter with a water separator catches particles down to 10 microns, and an engine-mounted secondary filter, on top of the engine on the left side, takes it down to 4 microns before fuel reaches the CP4.2. For 2020 the lift pump moved out of the frame-mounted conditioning module and into the tank, but the frame-mounted primary filter stays, and its exact location varies by configuration. Ford's 2022 schedule calls for filter changes every 15,000 to 22,500 miles in normal use or 10,000 to 15,000 in severe service, with the water separator drained monthly, and fuel with high impurity levels can call for changes sooner.
What fails and why
Water and debris are what kill a CP4, because the pump depends on clean fuel for lubrication. A water-in-fuel warning, or hard starting after filling up at a suspect station, is your cue to drain the separator and look hard at the fuel. The filter is also your early warning system. Metal flakes in a fuel filter are the CP4 red flag: stop driving and diagnose before more debris reaches the injectors. And on certain 2021 trucks, recall 22S01 (NHTSA 22V013000) addressed a void in the engine-mounted filter cap that can become a pinhole leak. A diesel smell or weep at the top of that filter is the sign, and the dealer remedy replaces both filters.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Factory-style replacement filters on schedule, or earlier, with regular separator drains, are the baseline every truck needs. Upgrades add capacity and a margin of safety. A FASS or AirDog lift pump system puts more filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4. A Fleece Performance Engineering engine-mounted filter assembly is a filtration upgrade for the top-of-engine filter. And a CP4 disaster prevention kit feeds the pump case clean fuel and filters its return to protect the rest of the system if the pump fails. Whichever way you go, the drain-and-change routine does not go away.

Fitment notes
Lift pump and filtration kits are sold in 2011-2016, 2017-2022 and 2023+ families. A 2017-2022 kit is the right family for your truck, but 2020-2022 trucks have the lift pump in the tank while 2017-2019 trucks do not, so read the 2020+ notes before you order. Replacement elements from FASS, AirDog and Donaldson are for those systems' own housings, so know which housing your truck has. Fleece sells a separate extension harness for cab-and-chassis trucks. Factory filter numbers have superseded more than once, so match OE-style filters by VIN, not by year.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I drain the water separator on a 2020-2022 6.7L?
Ford's 2022 schedule says monthly, with filter replacement every 15,000 to 22,500 miles in normal service or 10,000 to 15,000 in severe service. If you get a water-in-fuel warning or filled up somewhere questionable, drain it then as well.
Why add a FASS or AirDog system to a 2020-2022 F-350?
For the filtration as much as the pump. Both add filtration and water separation ahead of the CP4, and both catalog systems for the 2017-2022 6.7L, including the FASS Titanium Signature Series and the AirDog II-5G. Pick the 2017-2022 kit and confirm the 2020+ in-tank pump notes for your year.
What does a CP4 disaster prevention kit do?
It protects the rest of the fuel system if the CP4 fails. The S&S Diesel Motorsport kit supplies clean fuel to the pump case on its own circuit and sends the case return through a dedicated Donaldson P550943 filter before it reaches the tank. The SPE Motorsport and No Limit Fabrication kits in this collection take on the same problem; check each listing for its layout.
Is my 2021 truck part of the fuel filter cap recall?
Recall 22S01 (NHTSA 22V013000) covers certain 2021 Super Duty 6.7L trucks with a void in the engine-mounted secondary filter cap that can turn into a pinhole fuel leak. Run your VIN through Ford or NHTSA. If your truck is covered, the dealer replaces both filters.
