2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Custom Tuning

Custom tuning on a 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 or F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke starts with hardware: an interface that talks to the PCM and, if your calibration has positions, a switch to pick them. One thing to know first: no CARB EO custom PCM calibration for these years turned up in our sources, so compliance is yours to verify by state.

Custom tuning on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

A custom calibration is a rewrite of the factory PCM file, not a box that modifies signals on the way in. Stock, the pickup PCM is calibrated for 440 hp and 925 lb-ft in 2017 and 450 hp and 935 lb-ft in 2018-2019, and chassis cabs carry their own 330 hp, 750 lb-ft file. Those are different starting points, so a file built for one does not belong on the other. The rewrite goes in through an interface such as the HP Tuners MPVI4, and a multi-position switch lets the driver choose between positions the calibration was built with.

Compliance and what to watch

The research behind this page found no CARB EO custom PCM tune for the 2017-2019 6.7L, so a custom calibration is a verify-it-in-your-state purchase, and EO-numbered in-line modules are the documented 50-state route. A compliant calibration keeps the EGR, DOC, SCR and DPF working as built. Two mechanical notes apply to any custom file. First, the CP4.2 pump cannot hold rail pressure at long injector durations, so an aggressive file on a stock fuel system shows up as P0087 and pressure drop under load. Second, every PCM reprogram resets the 6R140's adaptive shift strategy, so the first several days after a flash will shift firmer.

What we carry

The HP Tuners MPVI4 is the interface that links a laptop to the truck for reading and writing the PCM. From SPE Motorsport there is a plug-and-play 5-position SOFT switch listed for 2011-2019 6.7L Powerstroke trucks. Calibrated Power Solutions makes a no-drill DSP switch bracket listed for 2011-2022 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, so you can mount a switch without drilling. More options live on the tuners page.

Fitment notes

Hardware and calibrations follow different year ranges. The DSP bracket covers 2011-2022 and the SPE switch covers 2011-2019, but calibrations split at 2020, when the 6.7L got new pistons, rods and crank, 36,000 psi fuel pressure and the 10R140 10-speed. Pickup versus chassis cab matters as much as model year. Verify by VIN, and confirm your calibration supports a switch before you buy one. For the rest of the engine lineup, start at the Powerstroke hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the MPVI4 for custom tuning?

The MPVI4 is the link between a laptop running HP Tuners software and the truck. If your calibration comes to you another way, such as on a handheld, you may not need it. Call the shop before you order and we will help you sort out which hardware your setup uses.

Does a 5-position switch work with any tune?

No. A switch only changes something if the calibration was built with switchable positions. The SPE SOFT switch here is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L Powerstroke trucks, which covers your 2017-2019 Super Duty.

Is custom tuning emissions-legal on my 2017-2019?

We did not find a CARB EO custom PCM calibration for these years in the sources behind this page. That makes custom tuning something to check against your state's rules before you buy. Any calibration you run should keep all factory emissions equipment working.
