Every 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke left the factory with the 6R140 TorqShift 6-speed. It is rated for 1,400 lb-ft of input torque and stayed in production through 2019 before the 10R140 took over for 2020. Ford gave it a high-capacity torque converter in 2015, and that converter carries through these years. At stock power the 6R140 has a reputation for durability. Built replacements are aimed at trucks that have worn the original out, tow heavy on a regular basis, or have outgrown the factory converter and valve body.
When a complete unit makes sense
The problems that send a 6R140 toward replacement are converter clutch wear (shudder at cruise, rpm flare under load, lazy lockup), valve body bore wear with sticking solenoids (harsh shifts, delayed engagement, codes P0776 and P2701) and overheating under heavy towing (over-temp warnings, a burnt fluid smell, limp mode on grades). A single problem can often be fixed with parts. When several show up together on a high-mileage truck, or the fluid smells burnt after an overheat, a complete transmission and converter is a more predictable path than chasing parts one at a time.

Fitment notes
The ATS packages are drivetrain-specific, so match 2WD or 4WD to your truck. The BD packages are listed for 2017-2019 only. None of these is meant for a 2020-up Super Duty, which uses the 10R140 10-speed and MERCON ULV fluid. Fill a replacement 6R140 with MERCON LV; published capacity runs about 17.4 to 18.5 quarts. Chassis cab trucks run a different 6.7L calibration and many of their parts differ from pickups, so confirm the listing covers your truck. Verify by VIN with the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is the stock 6R140 strong enough, or do I need a built unit?
The 6R140 is rated for 1,400 lb-ft of input and is considered durable at stock power. A built unit makes sense when the original is worn out, when you tow heavy all the time, or when converter shudder and slip have already shown up. If your truck is stock and the transmission is healthy, fluid service and an auxiliary cooler may be all you need.
Do these packages fit a 2020 or newer Super Duty?
No. Ford replaced the 6R140 with the 10R140 10-speed for 2020, and the newer trucks use MERCON ULV fluid. The BD packages here are listed for 2017-2019 and the ATS packages for 2011-2019.
Should I add a cooler when I install a new transmission?
If you tow heavy, it is a smart pairing. Overheating under heavy towing is one of the documented 6R140 problems, driven by limited stock cooling and converter slip. An auxiliary cooler in series with the stock liquid-to-liquid cooler, such as Mishimoto's 2017-2019 kit, is the direct upgrade and sits in our Transmission Parts collection.
What fluid goes in a replacement 6R140?
MERCON LV, the same spec as the factory unit. Do not use MERCON ULV, which is the fluid for the 2020-up 10R140. Motorcraft XT10QLVC and Hot Shot's Secret Blue Diamond Dexron VI & Mercon LV are both labeled for LV.
