Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel Filtration on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford filters the fuel twice on these trucks. The primary filter and water separator live in the Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module (DFCM) on the frame, alongside the electric lift pump, and stop particles down to 10 microns. The secondary filter sits on the engine and stops particles down to 4 microns before fuel reaches the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump. Both elements are replaced together with Motorcraft kit FD-4625AA. The normal interval is 22,500 miles; severe service or biodiesel drops it to 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 hours. Drain the separator at every oil change. After any filter change, prime the system by cycling the key to RUN 10 to 12 times, waiting each time for the lift pump to stop.
What fails and why
The filters are where fuel trouble shows up first, which makes them a diagnostic tool as much as a maintenance item. Water in the tank feeds microbial growth that leaves a black, scummy residue plugging the filters, often with dark, hazy fuel, power loss and smoke. A failing CP4.2 sheds metal from its worn cam follower, and metallic glitter in the secondary filter is what confirms the failure. A long crank when the engine is warm most often traces to a fuel leak that loses prime or to poor fuel, so pull and inspect the filters before you condemn the pump.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On a stock truck, OE-style replacement filters changed on schedule do the job. Owners who tow hard, run biodiesel or just want an extra layer of protection step up to a complete lift pump and filtration system, which brings its own pump and its own filter elements, some rated down to 2 microns. In between stock and a full system sit billet drain valve upgrades, filter manifolds and lids, fuel heaters, and CP4 disaster prevention kits built to limit the damage if the high-pressure pump fails.
What we carry
FASS covers the Titanium Signature Series and Titanium Signature Series PLUS, each also offered in a No-Drop version, and the Drop-In Series, plus XWS3002 water separator filters, PF3001XL particulate filters and filter packs in standard and XL lengths. AirDog brings the II-5G DF-165-5G Air/Fuel Separation System, universal 150GPH Raptor pumps, a low-pressure indicator light and FF100-2 (2 micron), F100-10 (10 micron) and WS100 replacement elements. Fleece Performance Engineering offers an engine-mounted filter assembly, a fuel filter bypass, a fuel heater and harness for filter bases with an extension harness for cab and chassis trucks, an M16x1.5 filter adapter fitting and an injector return line repair fitting. SPE Motorsport has a fuel filter system, a top fuel filter manifold, the Billet Exo Filter 2.0 lid, drain valve upgrades, an injector return repair kit, a fuel contamination kit and the Disaster Prevention 2.0 Kit. You will also find the S&S Diesel Motorsport CP4 Disaster Prevention Kit and Fuel Leak Prevention Kit, the No Limit Fabrication CP4 Bypass Disaster Kit, the XDP XD415 HD billet drain valve and the Donaldson P555095 replacement filter.
Fitment notes
Filter parts are year-specific on the 6.7L. The FD-4625AA kit fits 2017-2021 and is not the 2011-2016 FD-4615 kit; the housings differ. Factory-style lift pump, DFCM housing and primary filter parts are 2011-2019 pieces, because Ford moved the lift pump into the tank for 2020. The FASS and AirDog system listings each state their own year range, so match it to your truck. F-350, F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs differ from pickups in many parts, and Fleece sells a separate extension harness for cab and chassis trucks. Check each bypass or disaster kit listing for its exact fitment, and verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the fuel filters on a 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke?
Every 22,500 miles in normal service, or every 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 hours in severe service or on biodiesel. The FD-4625AA kit covers both the 10-micron primary on the frame and the 4-micron secondary on the engine. Drain the water separator at every oil change in between.
How do I prime the fuel system after a filter change?
Cycle the key to RUN 10 to 12 times, letting the lift pump run until it stops on each cycle, before you crank the engine. If the truck still cranks long when warm after the service, look for a fuel leak that is letting the system lose prime.
What does black sludge on my fuel filter mean?
It points to microbial growth, which happens when water gets into the tank, and it often comes with dark, hazy fuel and power loss. The fix is a biocide plus a cleaner, followed by a fresh set of filters.
What does metal in the fuel filter mean?
Metallic glitter in the secondary filter confirms a CP4.2 high-pressure pump failure. The pump's cam follower has worn and is shedding metal into the rails, injectors and lines, so the repair is rarely pump-only; it covers both pumps, all eight injectors and every fuel line, plus cleaning the tank.
