The CP4.2 on the 6.7L Powerstroke is lubricated by the fuel running through it. When that fuel is aerated or low on lubricity, the pump can wear and shed metal through the rails, injectors and return, and that can happen at any mileage. Ford approves ULSD and biodiesel blends up to B20, does not advise repeated use of higher blends, and recommends flushing fuel that has been stored more than a month. Additives work alongside good fuel, not in place of it: a lubricity treatment for everyday driving and an anti-gel when the weather turns cold, since diesel fuel gels.
What goes wrong
Low lubricity is the slow problem. It wears the CP4.2, and once the pump sheds metal, the repair covers the pump, both rails, all eight injectors, every high-pressure line and a cleaning of the tank and low-pressure lines. Gelled fuel is the cold-weather problem. Ford TSB 11-10-10 for 2011-2012 trucks covers P1291 and P1292 codes from an internally shorted injector, and it names DEF-contaminated or gelled fuel as possible causes. Where DEF contamination is confirmed, that TSB calls for replacing the complete high-pressure fuel system and the DFCM and flushing the base fuel system. DEF is not a fuel additive. It is 32.5 percent urea and 67.5 percent distilled water, it freezes around 12 F by design, and its heater thaws it. It goes in its own tank, never the fuel tank.
How to choose

Fitment notes
Fuel additives are not part-numbered to a truck the way filters are, but your engine still sets the rules. Stick to ULSD or biodiesel up to B20, follow the dose on the bottle, and keep DEF and fuel in their own tanks. An additive is prevention. If you are already seeing P0087, a hard hot start or metal in the fuel filter, treat that as a fuel system diagnosis, not an additive problem, and check the filter and low-side pressure first.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the 6.7L Powerstroke need a lubricity additive?
The Bosch CP4.2 is lubricated by the diesel it pumps. Diesel Hub recommends a supplemental additive because domestic diesel can fall below the lubricity that pump needs, and low-lubricity fuel lets the pump wear and shed metal. A lubricity treatment is insurance against that.
Can an additive fix a CP4.2 that is already failing?
No. Additive is prevention. Once the pump has shed metal, the repair reaches the pump, both rails, the injectors and all the high-pressure lines, plus a cleaning of the tank and low-pressure lines.
Should I put anti-gel in the DEF tank?
No. DEF is 32.5 percent urea and 67.5 percent distilled water, it freezes around 12 F by design, and the system thaws it with its heater. Anti-gel goes in the fuel tank. Keep DEF out of the fuel, too: Ford TSB 11-10-10 calls for replacing the complete high-pressure fuel system and DFCM on 2011-2012 trucks when DEF contamination is confirmed.
Can I run biodiesel in my 2011-2014 6.7L?
Ford approves ULSD and blends up to B20. Repeated use of higher biodiesel blends is not advised, and fuel stored more than a month should be flushed.
