2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Fuel Rail Parts

Fuel rails, rail pressure sensors and rail fittings for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.4L Powerstroke. One thing to know before you buy: a failing fuel rail pressure sensor can set P0087 and mimic a bad Siemens K16 pump, so test the sensor and the supply side before you condemn the pump.

Fuel rails on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The 6.4L Powerstroke runs one common rail per bank, both fed by the gear-driven Siemens K16. Rail pressure runs to 169.96 MPa, about 24,650 psi, and some sources quote up to 25,000 psi. The fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor sits on the right side. The K16's pressure control and volume control valves are built into the pump and are not serviceable separately, while the rail pressure sensor is sold as its own part. From the rails, high-pressure lines feed the eight piezo injectors. The K16 and its injectors are unique to the 6.4L, and 6.0L HEUI or 6.7L Bosch pump parts do not interchange.

What fails and why

Rail parts come up for two reasons. The first is a drifting or failed rail pressure sensor, which mimics pump failure: P0087 with a healthy pump and erratic rail pressure readings. The second is contamination. When a K16 fails, debris lodges in both rails and the high-pressure lines, so they have to be replaced or flushed along with the pump; replacing the pump alone invites a repeat failure. Electrical faults can muddy the picture as well. On early 2008 trucks built before August 20, 2007, the HPFP harness can chafe on the block, ground the volume-control circuit and set P0003, P0004 or P0091, which TSB 07-26-2 covers. Read every code before you buy rail parts.

Diagnose first, then replace

For P0087, work in order: pull all codes, check the fuel filter and lift pump, run an injector return-flow test, monitor live rail pressure, check supply pressure and volume to the HPFP, test HPFP output and leakage, then do a visual leak inspection. For P0088, rail pressure too high, the first step is the reflash in TSB 12-7-7, before any pressure or sensor diagnostics. When parts are called for, a stock truck gets stock-replacement parts: a reman rail set after contamination and a new sensor when the sensor is the fault. The stock pump and injectors are adequate below about 700 rwhp. Past that, builds go to dual K16 pumps, and the Exergy rail plugs, rail-end adapters and tees here are build hardware, not service parts for a stock truck.

What we carry

  • Rails: the Alliant Power AP63669 remanufactured fuel rail set for the 2008-2010 6.4L.
  • Sensor: the Alliant Power AP63422 fuel rail pressure sensor for the 2008-2010 6.4L.
  • Contamination repair: the XDP XD610 Fuel System Contamination Kit, stock replacement, for the 2008-2010 6.4L.
  • Fittings: Exergy Performance rail and plumbing fittings, including the 1-018-133 M18x1.5 rail plug, the 1-018-132 M18x1.5 rail end to M14x1.5 adapter, the 1-008-003 M14x1.5 three-way tee, the 1-018-043 M14x1.5 plug and nut (rail cap), and the 1-018-148 and 1-018-149 M12x1.5 supply fittings to -6AN and -8AN.

Fitment notes

The Alliant Power rail set and sensor and the XDP kit are listed for the 2008-2010 6.4L used in the F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty. The Exergy pieces are sold by thread size, and the M12x1.5 AN adapters are named as CP3 supply fittings; the 6.4L uses a Siemens K16, so confirm the application with us before ordering. The FRP sensor mounts on the right side, so you are buying one sensor, not a pair. Verify by VIN with the fitment checker.

Frequently asked questions

Is my P0087 a bad pump or a bad sensor?

It can be either, and a drifting rail pressure sensor is a listed cause of P0087 with a healthy pump. Look for erratic rail pressure readings, then work the full order: codes, filter and lift pump, injector return flow, live rail pressure, supply to the pump, then pump output. Only after that does the K16 come off.

What should I do first for a P0088?

Start with the reflash in TSB 12-7-7. P0088 means rail pressure is too high, and the reflash comes before any pressure or sensor diagnostics. If the code returns after the update, move on to testing the sensor and pump.

Do the rails have to be replaced after a K16 failure?

They have to be replaced or flushed. Debris from a failed K16 lodges in both rails and the high-pressure lines. The Alliant Power AP63669 reman rail set and the XDP XD610 contamination kit are the stock-replacement routes here. If you found white crystalline residue in the HFCM filter bowl, that points to diesel exhaust fluid in the fuel and the whole system is condemned.

Where is the fuel rail pressure sensor on a 6.4L?

On the right side of the engine, on the right-bank rail. Unlike the pressure and volume control valves inside the K16, which are not serviceable separately, the sensor is replaced on its own.
