Transmission pans on the 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke

Ford paired the 6.0L Powerstroke with the 5R110W TorqShift, a five-speed automatic rated for 1,000 lb-ft, with Tow/Haul and PTO provision. It replaced the 4R100 used behind the 7.3L. The 5R110W takes Mercon SP fluid, and 2003-2007 units carry a toilet-paper-roll style bypass filter in addition to the main filter. Routine service comes down to fluid, both filters and the pan gasket.

Problems a new pan will not fix

A new pan is not a cure for shifting or lockup complaints. On high-mileage TorqShifts, a worn TCC control valve causes converter slip and cycling with codes P0741 or P1783, and the fix is the correct-year valve assembly. Many other transmission faults are electrical. One documented 2007 F-350 had corroded body grounds reading over 20 ohms, and the 5R110W pump became the current return path until electrolysis destroyed it. Clean and verify body and engine grounds before you replace solenoids.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Pick by how the truck works. If the factory pan is damaged or leaking and the truck runs stock, a pan built for the 5R110W gets you back on the road. If you tow or work the truck hard, a deep pan adds fluid capacity over the factory pan, and an aluminum pan like the PPE unit is built as a heavy-duty replacement. Either way, the job is the same: drop the pan, change the filters, fit the gasket and refill with Mercon SP.

Fitment notes

Verify by VIN. Early-2003 Super Dutys were still 7.3L trucks, so an automatic 2003 can need either the 5R110W pan or the E4OD/4R100 pan. The 5R110W ran from 2003 to 2010, but 2008+ 6.4L units carry their own calibration and service parts, so treat the 2003-2007 6.0L transmission as its own family and trust a pan's listed years over the transmission name. Trucks with the ZF S6-650 six-speed manual do not use these pans. If you have a 6.0L Excursion, offered for 2003-2005 only, confirm the pan with the fitment checker.

Frequently asked questions

What fluid and filters do I need when the pan comes off?

The 5R110W takes Mercon SP. The 2003-2007 units use a bypass filter in addition to the main filter, so buy both, along with a pan gasket. If you install a deep pan, it holds more fluid than the factory pan, so expect to add extra when you refill.

Do any of these pans fit both the 7.3L and the 6.0L?

Some are listed that way. The ATS 301-900-3104 pan names the E4OD, 4R100 and 5R110, and the BD Diesel 1061716 and Mishimoto MMTP-F2D-89 pans list 1994-2010 Powerstroke fitment. Mag-Hytec builds separate pans for the F5R110 and the E4OD/4R100, so match that one to your transmission.

Will a new pan fix shifting or lockup problems?

No. Lockup slip on a high-mileage TorqShift can come from a worn TCC control valve, and many transmission faults on these trucks are electrical. Clean and verify the body and engine grounds and read the codes before you spend money on hard parts.
