2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke Oil Filters

Oil filters and filter hardware for the 2003-2007 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.0L Powerstroke. On this engine the oil does two jobs: it lubricates the bearings, and the high-pressure oil pump uses it to fire the HEUI injectors. Worn oil hurts the injectors before it hurts the bearings, so the filter matters more here than on a common-rail diesel.

Oil filtration on the 2003-2007 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke

A crank-driven gerotor pump in the front cover, with a relief valve set near 75 psi, feeds both the engine and the high-pressure oil pump in the back of the valley. That pump raises injection control pressure anywhere from 500 to more than 3,600 psi, and each injector multiplies it into roughly 23,000-26,000 psi of fuel pressure. The whole system holds 15 quarts with the filter, and Ford's filter for it is the Motorcraft FL-2016.

What goes wrong

Worn oil and stretched intervals degrade injector operation before they show up as bearing wear. On a high-mileage engine, the warning signs are low oil pressure at hot idle and injection control pressure that will not build. A filter cannot fix heat, though. The oil cooler in the valley is a stacked-plate exchanger with coolant passages under 0.5 mm in places, and it plugs with casting sand, rust and silicate. When it restricts, engine oil temperature runs 15 F or more above coolant temperature at highway speed, oil climbs past 240 F, and the PCM defuels around 255 F. If you change filters on time and still see that split on a monitor, look at the cooler, not the filter.

Choosing a filter and cap

Ford's severe-service oil interval on the 6.0L is 5,000 miles, not 7,500, and the filter gets changed every time. The MAHLE OX783D is an OEM-grade replacement filter listed for 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L engines. The G&R Diesel GRD603002 billet oil filter cap is the upgrade side of this page, a machined cap listed for 2003-2010 6.0L engines. The rest of the 6.0L catalog starts at the Powerstroke hub.

Fitment notes

Both parts here are listed through 2010. The 6.0L left the Super Duty after 2007 but stayed in E-Series vans through 2010, and the MAHLE filter also lists the 6.4L. Early-2003 Super Dutys still came with the 7.3L, so confirm your engine before ordering. If you are unsure, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the oil filter on a 6.0L Powerstroke?

With every oil change. Ford's severe-service interval for this engine is 5,000 miles, and the 6.0L counts on clean oil to run its injectors as well as protect its bearings.

How much oil does a 6.0L take with a filter change?

15 US quarts with the filter. Ford lists 15W-40 or 10W-30 Super Duty oil, and 5W-40 synthetic is widely used.

Will a better oil filter bring down high oil temperatures?

No. High oil temperature on a 6.0L points to the oil cooler in the valley. On a warm truck at highway speed, oil running 15 F or more above coolant means the cooler is restricted, and the fix is the cooler, not the filter.
