2007.5-2010 Chevy Duramax LMM Transmission Filters

Transmission filters and filter kits for the 2007.5-2010 LMM Duramax in the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD. Every LMM pickup left the plant with the Allison 1000 six-speed, and that transmission filters in two spots: an internal sump filter and a spin-on. Before you order, find out whether your truck still runs the factory shallow pan or a deep pan, because the internal filter depth follows the pan.

Allison 1000 filtration on the 2007.5-2010 Silverado HD

The LMM 6.6L Duramax came behind one transmission in these pickups: the Allison 1000 six-speed, with Tow/Haul, Tap-Up/Tap-Down manual selection and auto grade braking. It runs Dexron-VI fluid, and it uses an internal sump filter (the 2006-2010 unit is the ACDelco TF920) along with a spin-on filter (TF950, or Allison 29539579). Published service is every 50,000 miles in normal duty and every 25,000 in severe duty. These HD trucks also came with a standard auxiliary external transmission oil cooler, so fluid and anything floating in it travels out through the lines, not just around the pan.

What fails and why

The filter is where you see trouble first. With age, valve body valves seize and their bores wear, pump gears lose efficiency and the babbitt bushings wear out; what you feel is sloppier shifting than new, quick downshifts under load and delayed engagement. A stock torque converter that has been leaned on with added power or hard towing is the worse case: the thin stator cracks and the soft front cover balloons, and the debris that follows contaminates the fluid and takes the rest of the unit with it. Adaptive shift logic can hide that decline until something lets go, which is why what comes out on the filter matters more than how the truck felt last week. While the pan is down, look hard at the transmission cooler lines. They leak at the factory hose-to-hardline crimp, sometimes under 25,000 miles, and the tells are red ATF mist on the frame and crossmember, overheating, and flare shifts.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A stock Silverado HD on the normal interval needs an OE-grade internal filter, a spin-on and a clean gasket in the factory shallow pan. If you tow, a deep pan with the matching deeper internal filter gives you more fluid to work with, and filter locks exist because a deep filter has to stay seated. The important part is that internal filter depth differs between deep and standard sumps, so the pan and filter get bought together, not separately.

What we carry

Allison Transmission's own spin-on 29539579 and a deep-pan internal filter; PPE standard pan filters, deep-pan filters built for PPE pans, and the Allison Micropure spin-on fluid filter; Merchant Automotive filter kits in shallow-pan (10715) and deep-pan (10716) versions, a deep filter lock, and deep pan kits that come with the filter lock or with fluid; a Mag-Hytec A1000 deep-pan filter; and a BD Diesel filter service kit.

Fitment notes

Pan depth decides your filter, not cab style or bed length, so a Regular Cab long box and a Crew Cab short box take the same part. Deep-pan filters are matched to the pan they were designed for, which is why the PPE deep filters are listed for PPE pans. Much of this hardware is cataloged across the 2001-2019 Duramax run because the Allison sump did not change much; that is normal, but still verify with the fitment checker or by VIN, especially on a truck that has had a pan swapped before you owned it. Whatever goes back in is Dexron-VI.

Frequently asked questions

How often should the Allison filters be changed on my Silverado HD?

The published interval is 50,000 miles for normal duty and 25,000 miles for severe duty, and severe duty is the honest answer for most Florida trucks that tow. Heavy towers go much shorter than that; some owners report changing fluid and filters as often as every 2,500 miles, which is anecdotal rather than a factory recommendation. If you are not sure which camp you are in, change it on the severe schedule and read the filter.

Do I need a different filter if someone already installed a deep pan?

Yes. Internal filter depth is different between a deep sump and a standard sump, so a shallow-pan filter in a deep pan will sit too far from the fluid. Merchant Automotive splits its kits for exactly this reason, 10715 for the shallow pan and 10716 for the deep one, and PPE lists its deep filters for PPE pans. If you cannot tell what is bolted on, pull the pan or call us before ordering.
