The LMM's fuel system is demanding in one specific way: the CP3 in the engine valley both lifts fuel from the tank and pressurizes it to 26,000 psi, with no electric lift pump helping it, and whatever is in the tank reaches six-hole Bosch injectors at that pressure. Owners use additives for injector lubricity and to help regen behavior, and that is the honest extent of the claim. An additive is not a repair. It will not clear a loaded diesel particulate filter and it will not seal a cracked filter head. GM approved blends up to B5 biodiesel for this engine, so additive choice is about the base fuel you buy, not about getting around a factory limit.
What owners use them for
Three jobs come up again and again in the bays. Routine dosing, as cheap insurance on lubricity for an injection system that runs at very high pressure. A periodic concentrated cleaner, usually when a truck starts idling rough or hazing on start-up. And cold-weather protection for trucks that travel. It is worth being clear about the second one: rough idle, haze and smoke on start-up, a drop in economy and harder cold starts do appear on high-mileage LMMs, and no published mileage threshold exists for it, but what identifies a faulty injector is a balance-rate reading - roughly -4 to +4 mm3 at idle is considered healthy - followed by a return-flow test. A bottle in the tank does not replace that test, and a fresh fuel filter and sound filter-head seals come before either.
How to choose
The shelf sorts into four groups. Everyday treatments you dose at most fill-ups: Hot Shot's Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment, Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment, Alliant Power ULTRAGUARD, Merchant Automotive's diesel fuel additive, XDP Diesel Power Plus and Exergy's diesel additive in 4 and 16 ounce bottles. Concentrated cleaners used on an interval: Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Extreme and Lucas Oil Diesel Deep Clean. Lubricity-focused products: Hot Shot's Secret LX4 Lubricity Extreme and Alliant Power LUBRIGUARD. Cold-weather products: Alliant Power WINTERGUARD, Lucas Oil Anti-Gel Cold Weather Diesel Treatment, Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Winter Anti-Gel and EDT + Winter Defense, the Winter Rescue emergency bottle, and Exergy's winter blend. Lucas Oil Cetane Power Booster sits on its own as a cetane product. Several lines also come by the case if you run more than one truck.
What we carry
Treatments and cleaners from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil, the GUARD-series treatments from Alliant Power, 4 and 16 ounce bottles and winter blend from Exergy Performance, Diesel Power Plus from XDP, and a diesel fuel additive from Merchant Automotive. The rest of the fuel side, including filters and lift pumps, sits under the Duramax pages, and fuel additives for other platforms are grouped together as well.
Fitment notes
Additives are not year-specific the way a filter head is, but dosing is tank-specific: a standard-box Silverado HD holds 26 gallons and a long box holds 34, so read the ratio on the label and dose for the tank you actually have rather than by the bottle. Follow the label for cold-weather products in particular. If you run biodiesel, stay within the B5 blend the factory approved.
Frequently asked questions
Will an additive fix a rough idle or smoke on start-up?
It may help if the cause is fuel quality or lubricity, but treat it as a trial, not a diagnosis. Those same symptoms appear with injector wear on high-mileage LMMs, and the way to know is a balance-rate check - about -4 to +4 mm3 at idle is healthy - and then a return-flow test. Change the fuel filter and inspect the filter-head seals before you spend money on either.
Do additives help with DPF regens?
Owners do use additives with regen behavior in mind, and that is a reasonable reason to run one. What an additive will not do is clean out a diesel particulate filter that is already loaded; that is a diagnosis and a repair, not a bottle. If your truck is regenerating constantly, have the exhaust and engine side looked at.
Which additive should I run in winter?
If the truck stays in central Florida with us, anti-gel is far less of a concern than it is for a truck that tows north. For those trips, the winter products here range from preventative blends you dose before the cold to an emergency bottle for fuel that has already gelled. Dose by tank size and follow the label ratio.
