Call or Text (352) 722-5295Suspension components on the 2007.5-2010 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD
Control arms, ball joints, shocks, sway bar links, torsion keys and cab mounts are the component categories for these trucks, and they all hang off the same factory design: torsion bars and upper and lower control arms in front, multileaf springs at the rear, two-stage on a 2500HD and three-stage on a 3500HD. Factory damping was 35 mm twin-tube on 2500HD trucks and 46 mm monotube on the 3500HD, which is worth knowing when you compare replacement shocks. Rear axle capacity is 6,900 lb on a 2500HD and 9,200 lb on a dually, so the parts that carry load are doing real work. Everything on this page is a replacement for, or an upgrade to, that factory layout on a 6.6L Duramax truck.
What wears out
Two things drive most component sales on these trucks. First, leveling. Once the torsion bars are cranked or taller keys are in, the front-end angles change and ball joints, tie rods and the idler and pitman arms wear faster, showing up as clunks and uneven tire wear. Second, rear sag under a fifth wheel or a camper, because the two-stage 2500HD leaf pack gives up ride height when it is loaded. Shocks are the quiet one: nothing breaks, the truck just stops settling behind a trailer.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock-height Silverado that just rides rough, a direct-fit twin-tube shock in the factory valving range is the right call. For a leveled or lifted truck, the shock has to be built for the new ride height instead of a stock-length unit. For a truck that tows heavy, a monotube or remote-reservoir shock holds up better to heat. Air helper springs are the load fix rather than a ride fix: they add rear support when the trailer is on and come back down when it is off. Traction bars, stronger sway bar end links and a bump stop kit are for the truck that is making power or working off pavement.
What we carry
Bilstein covers damping with B6 4600, B8 5100, B8 5160 and stock-mount remote-reservoir shocks, listed front or rear and by drivetrain. Air Lift brings LoadLifter 5000 and 5000 Ultimate Plus helper spring kits, stainless steel upgrades, two-, four- and six-inch air spring spacers, angled spacers, a universal cradle, air hose, replacement compressors, WirelessOne and WirelessAIR tanks and load controllers. Wehrli Custom Fabrication lists 60-inch and 68-inch traction bars, bracket and hardware install kits and replacement bushings and heims. BDS Suspension adds fixed and Recoil traction bars with a mounting kit, an upper control arm kit and a front skid plate for 4-6 inch BDS lifts. Merchant Automotive has an off-road lower control arm bump stop kit, and BD Diesel upgraded sway bar end links.
Fitment notes
These components are listed for the 2001-2010 trucks. The 2011 refresh replaced the frame, control arms, torsion bars and springs, so nothing crosses that line. Shocks are sold by position and drivetrain, and 3500HD trucks with single or dual rear wheels differ at the rear. A helper spring kit written for a Silverado 1500 will not fit an HD. On a lifted truck, air springs need the matching spacer kit. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse my stock shocks after leveling the front?
Not well. A stock-length shock runs out of travel at a raised ride height, which is why the B8 5100 series exists. Pick the shock that matches the height you are running, front and rear.
Do air helper springs need a compressor?
No, but it helps. The bags can be filled by hand at any air source, and a load controller or a wireless tank and compressor kit lets you adjust from the cab instead. Both approaches are listed here.
Will a bump stop kit change my ride height?
No. It changes where the suspension stops at the bottom of its travel, which protects the lower control arm and frame when the truck works off pavement. Ride height comes from springs, torsion keys or a lift kit.
