GM gave the new-body heavy-duty Silverado power four-wheel disc brakes with four-wheel antilock as standard equipment, along with Dynamic Rear Proportioning that shifts brake force rearward as the bed and the hitch load up, and corrosion-resistant linings. Behind the LMM, the Allison 1000 six-speed does part of the stopping for you: auto grade braking downshifts on a descent so the service brakes are not the only thing holding a loaded truck back. Trucks ordered with the Heavy-Duty Trailering Package got the factory integrated trailer brake controller, which is tied into the ABS instead of hung under the dash. Steering is power recirculating-ball.
What fails and why
Front rotor pulsation is the complaint we hear most on these trucks: a shake in the steering wheel and a pulsing pedal as you slow down from highway speed. Owner forums put normal rotor life on a 2007.5-2010 Silverado HD somewhere around 50,000 to 70,000 miles. That is a forum figure and not a GM specification, but it is a useful yardstick, because anything meaningfully shorter than that usually has a mechanical cause sitting behind it. The common one is caliper slide pins that have stopped sliding. A pin that is seized keeps the pad in light contact, so you get wear on one side of the rotor, a wheel that is hot when you stop, and a brake that drags. Load matters too. Heavier tires and towing heat the stock brakes faster, and fade on a long grade is the usual first warning. If you have gone up in tire size, plan on the brakes working harder than they did stock.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a truck doing what it was built to do, an OEM-grade replacement is the right answer. ACDelco Gold rotors with the black-coated hat are the straight-across choice, and the coating keeps the hat from rusting up, which matters on a Florida truck. If yours tows regularly or wears bigger tires, the ACDelco Performance slotted rotors give the pad face somewhere to push gas and debris and make it easier to see when a rotor is starting to glaze. Whichever way you go, replace or at least service the slide pins and boots at the same time, because a new rotor on a pin that is still stuck will be back to pulsing. Fluid is part of the job, not an afterthought: a full bleed with fresh fluid brings back pedal feel on a truck whose brake fluid has been in there since these trucks were new.
What we carry
ACDelco covers the OEM-grade side here with Gold front and rear disc brake rotors with black-coated hats, Performance slotted front and rear rotors, and a front disc brake dust shield for trucks whose original shield has rusted away. Merchant Automotive supplies the brake pin and boot kit that belongs with every pad job. Lucas Oil covers the consumables: non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner, contact cleaner, and DOT 3 and DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid. Wehrli Custom Fabrication makes the billet aluminum master cylinder cap and the reservoir cover if you want the under-hood side finished off. The rest of our Duramax parts for this truck are one click away.
Fitment notes
Brake fitment on these trucks is not one size. Rotor and caliper parts differ between the 2500HD and the 3500HD, and the 3500HD was sold as a single-rear-wheel truck or a dual-rear-wheel truck, so know which one you have before you order. We do not publish a rotor diameter on this page, because the numbers floating around the forums are not GM figures; verify by VIN with the fitment checker on the product page, or call the shop and we will look it up with you. Cab and bed combinations ran from regular cab long box to crew cab long box, and chassis-cab and pickup-box-delete trucks are their own case. Parts for 2007.5-2010 also do not automatically carry over to the 2011 and newer HD trucks, which were revised from the frame up.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my front rotors keep going bad?
Repeat rotor trouble on these trucks usually is not the rotor itself. Sticking caliper slide pins are the common root cause, because a pin that will not slide holds the pad against the rotor and heats one side of it unevenly. Service or replace the pins and boots, then put the new rotors on. Owners generally report 50,000 to 70,000 miles out of a set, so a rotor that fails well short of that is telling you something else is wrong.
Do I need to touch the slide pins when I replace pads?
Yes, that is the first thing to check on an LMM-era Silverado HD with uneven pad wear. Pull the pins, look at the boots, and lubricate or replace them while the caliper is off the truck. It is a short job with the wheel already in the air, and it is the difference between a brake job that lasts and one that comes back.
I put bigger tires on my Silverado. Are the stock brakes still enough?
Heavier tires and towing both make the factory brakes work harder and heat up sooner, and the first sign is usually fade partway down a long grade. If the truck is loaded, geared and shod heavier than it left the dealer, treat the brakes as part of that build rather than assuming the stock setup will keep up. Call us with what you are running and we will talk through it.
Can I add trailer braking to a truck that did not come with it?
The OEM-style answer is the factory integrated trailer brake controller, which came with the Heavy-Duty Trailering Package and works through the truck's ABS rather than as a separate box under the dash. Whether your truck can take it depends on how it was built, so check the VIN before you buy anything. We can tell you what your truck already has.
