Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel filtration on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The factory system uses two filters. Fuel leaves the electric in-tank lift pump and passes through a frame-mounted water separator, part 68436631AA, which was new for 2019. It then goes through the engine-mounted filter, 68157291AA (Fleetguard FS53000), a NanoNet element rated at 3 microns at 95 percent, before it reaches the high-pressure pump. Both filters share a 15,000-mile or 12-month interval, and Mopar sells them together as a kit for 2019-2024 trucks. Between changes, drain the water separator routinely. On the 6.7L Cummins, these two filters protect a pump that feeds the rail at up to 29,000 psi.
Why filtration matters here
Both pumps used in this generation, the CP4.2 on 2019-2020 trucks and the CP3 on 2021-2024 trucks, depend on that frame-mounted separator to keep water out. When a CP4.2 fails it sheds metal into the rail, injectors, lines and tank, and metal in the fuel filter is one of the warning signs, along with ticking, power loss, stalling or a no-start. That makes every filter change an inspection: check the old element for metal before you throw it away. After any filter service, turn the key to run and let the in-tank pump prime the system before cranking. On CP4.2 trucks there is no gear pump on the high-pressure pump, so the electric in-tank pump does all the supply work.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock truck needs two good filters on schedule, and that is the baseline for this engine. Owners who want more margin add a frame-mounted lift pump with its own filtration. AirDog and FASS build systems specifically for the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L to steady supply pressure and remove water and air ahead of the high-pressure pump. The AirDog Raptor 4G 100 gph is internally regulated and needs no return line. The AirDog II-5G is rated 165-220 gph and is sold with fuel sump kits that replace the factory in-tank pickup draw.
What we carry
FASS: Titanium Signature Series systems in standard and PLUS versions, each also offered as No-Drop, the Drop-In Series, Extreme Water Separator filters in standard and extended-length XL, the PF3001XL particulate filter, and filter packs. AirDog: FP-100-4G and FP-150-4G air/fuel separation systems, II-5G systems, Raptor 4G 100 gph and 150 gph pumps, universal Raptor pumps, 2-micron and 10-micron replacement filters, the WS100 replacement water separator and a low-pressure indicator light. You will also find the BD Diesel Venom lift pump with filter and water separator, the G&R Diesel CAT fuel filter conversion kit, and the Fleece Performance Engineering under-bed fuel filter assembly. For complete pump systems across more trucks, see lift pumps.
Fitment notes
The water separator is the most common wrong order on this truck: 68197867AB is the 2013-2018 part, and 2019-2024 trucks take 68436631AA. The engine-mounted 68157291AA is the same for 2013-2024. Read the year range in each product title. FASS lists separate Titanium Signature kits for 2019-2020 trucks and for 2021-2024 trucks, AirDog's truck-specific kits are listed for 2019-2023, the BD Venom is listed for 2013-2022, and the G&R CAT conversion is listed for 2019-2020. On a 2019-2020 truck, confirm whether it still has the CP4.2 or the recall CP3, because fuel-system kits must match the pump on the truck. Sump kits are tank-specific, short bed versus long bed. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What fuel filters does a 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins use?
Two per service: the engine-mounted 68157291AA, a 3-micron NanoNet element, and the frame-mounted 68436631AA water separator. Both are on a 15,000-mile or 12-month interval. Mopar sells them as a kit for 2019-2024 trucks.
Is the engine fuel filter the same as on my older 6.7L?
Yes. The engine-mounted 68157291AA (Fleetguard FS53000) is unchanged from 2013. The frame-mounted water separator is the part that changed for 2019, so a 2013-2018 separator will not fit a 2019-2024 truck.
What should I do right after changing the fuel filters?
Turn the key to run and let the electric in-tank lift pump prime the system before you crank; that protects the high-pressure pump. Drain the water separator and check the old elements for metal, which can point to a pump problem on a CP4.2 truck.
What does a frame-mounted lift pump system add?
Systems from AirDog and FASS built for the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L steady the supply pressure to the high-pressure pump and separate water and air from the fuel before it gets there. Some, like the AirDog Raptor 4G 100 gph, are internally regulated and need no return line.
