2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Towing Parts

This is the towing collection for the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: B&W ball mounts and a weight-distribution hitch, Big Hitch Products pulling hitches, and Air Lift compressors and controls. Know which body you have before you order. Anything that bolts to the frame or bumper follows the DS (2018-2019) or DT (2020-2023) truck, not the engine badge.

Towing with the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

The EcoDiesel is a VM Motori 3.0L V6 built for the half-ton Ram 1500 only. There is no 2500 or 3500 version, so everything on this page is chosen for a 1500. Two engine generations share this collection. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic run the second-generation engine at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft, backed by a ZF 8HP70 eight-speed. The 2020-2023 DT trucks got the third-generation engine at 260 hp at 3,600 rpm and 480 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm, backed by a ZF 8HP75.

That low-rpm torque earned the later trucks a 12,560-lb maximum trailer rating when properly equipped, close to the DT platform's ceiling of 12,750 lb towing and 2,300 lb payload. Testing backs it up. In TFL's Ike Gauntlet run, an EcoDiesel on a 3.55 axle pulled an 8,700-lb trailer up the grade in 8 minutes 43 seconds, averaged 5.4 mpg climbing, and needed four brake applications coming back down. A first-drive review truck towed about 6,000 lb of boat and trailer without drama.

What to check before you hook up

The hitch hardware itself is simple. The recalls worth checking sit around it. On 2020-2022 trucks, recall 22V904 covers a tailgate striker that can be out of alignment and let the tailgate unlatch. Several 2020-2024 recalls cover rearview camera and display faults that can leave you with no camera image in reverse, which makes backing up to a coupler harder. Those remedies are software updates. Run your VIN through a dealer or the NHTSA recall lookup and get any open campaign done before a trip.

The other thing to watch is squat. A heavy tongue load pushes down on a coil-sprung rear axle, and air helper springs are the conventional way to control it. Trucks with Ram's optional factory air suspension already self-level under tongue weight, and they do not take coil-spring helper kits.

Stock setup vs. upgrades

Start with what the truck was built for. Spec sheets list a Max Tow Package (Diesel) option on 2020-2021 trucks, and that package is the factory route to the top rating. Ratings also move with cab, drive and axle, so 12,560 lb is the best case, not the number every EcoDiesel carries. Verify the package and the rating by VIN before you buy a trailer around that figure. On a 2018 Ram 1500 or 2019 Classic, use the rating Ram lists for your exact configuration.

Upgrades here are about control and fit. An adjustable ball mount lets you set the drop so the trailer rides level, and change it when the trailer changes. A weight-distribution hitch spreads a heavy tongue load across the truck and trailer axles. An on-board compressor and load controller let you set helper spring pressure for each load instead of driving to an air hose. None of it raises Ram's published rating.

What we carry

B&W Trailer Hitches supplies most of the hitch side: Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts with 2-inch, 2.5-inch and 3-inch shanks and drops from 2.5 to 9 inches, in Standard, MultiPro/MultiFlex and Pintle versions, plus the BMTT31004 Triple Tow ball mount, heavy-duty ball mounts, hitch balls, reducer sleeves and the WDHK4500 weight-distribution hitch. Big Hitch Products adds the BHP2000 (2-inch) and BHP2001 (2.5-inch) adjustable pulling hitches.

Air Lift covers the air side: WirelessONE (25980 and 25980EZ) and WirelessAIR (74000EZ) compressor systems, tank upgrades (25981, 25981EZ and 74100EZ), the 25592 Single Load Controller II, the 25856 Heavy Duty Dual Load Controller, a 16192 replacement on-board compressor, 2-inch and 4-inch air spring spacers, and the 52300 LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus stainless steel upgrade. To see every hitch we stock across all trucks, browse the hitches collection.

Fitment notes

Bumper and receiver hitches are body-specific. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic share the DS body, and the 2020-2023 trucks use the DT body. The EcoDiesel does not change rear-frame fitment either way. If your 2019 is the new-body DT, it is not an EcoDiesel, because the DT launched without a diesel. Ball mounts slide into the receiver, so match the shank to your receiver opening. Air Lift helper kits fit the five-link coil rear, and trucks with factory four-corner air suspension do not take them. The DT came only as a Quad Cab or Crew Cab, and 2023 EcoDiesels were sold only as Crew Cab 4x4. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

How much can my EcoDiesel Ram 1500 tow?

The best-case number for a properly equipped 2020-2023 EcoDiesel is 12,560 lb. Cab, drive and axle all change it, and spec sheets list a Max Tow Package (Diesel) on 2020-2021 trucks as the factory route to the top rating. Check the rating for your VIN before you shop for a trailer. Owners of a 2018 or a 2019 Classic should use the figure Ram lists for their configuration.

Will a hitch from a 2018 Ram 1500 bolt onto my 2021?

No. The 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Classic use the DS body, 2020-2023 trucks use the DT body, and bumper and receiver hitches are specific to each. Ball mounts, hitch balls and sleeves move between trucks as long as the sizes match.

Do I need air helper springs if my truck has air suspension?

No. Ram's optional factory air suspension self-levels under tongue weight, and those trucks do not take coil-spring helper kits. Helper springs are for the coil-sprung rear, where they are the usual way to control squat under a heavy tongue load.

How does the EcoDiesel handle a long grade with a trailer?

In TFL's Ike Gauntlet test, an EcoDiesel on a 3.55 axle pulled an 8,700-lb trailer up the grade in 8 minutes 43 seconds at 5.4 mpg, then needed four brake applications on the way down. That truck had the third-generation engine with 480 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm, and the run was well inside the 12,560-lb best-case rating.

Should I check recalls before I tow?

Yes. Recall 22V904 covers a tailgate striker on 2020-2022 trucks that can let the tailgate open, and several 2020-2024 recalls fix rearview camera and display faults with software updates. Both affect a towing day, so run the VIN and get any open campaign done first.
