The third-generation EcoDiesel in the 2020-2023 DT trucks makes 480 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm, and that torque earned it a 12,560-lb maximum trailer rating when properly equipped. Treat that as the best case. Cab, drive and axle all move the number, and 2023 trucks were built only as Crew Cab 4x4. The 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic run the earlier 240 hp, 420 lb-ft engine, so look up the rating Ram lists for that exact truck. Whatever the number, every piece between the receiver and the coupler has to be rated for the trailer you actually pull.
Getting the hardware right
Three things decide a ball mount: shank size, drop and rating. The shank has to match your receiver opening. The drop sets how high the ball sits, and the goal is a trailer that rides level behind the truck. To find it, measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, then from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler with the trailer level; the difference is your drop or rise. B&W's Tow & Stow mounts adjust, so one mount can cover more than one trailer, and as the name says, the ball can be stowed when you are not towing.
A Pintle version of the Tow & Stow serves trailers with a lunette ring. The Triple Tow mount carries more than one ball size, which is handy when your trailers use different couplers.
Adjustable mount, pulling hitch or weight distribution
An adjustable ball mount is the everyday answer for a truck that pulls more than one trailer. Big Hitch Products' adjustable pulling hitches, the BHP2000 for a 2-inch receiver and the BHP2001 for a 2.5-inch receiver, are another adjustable option. B&W's BWBMHD30010 heavy-duty ball mounts round out the ball-mount side. The WDHK4500 weight-distribution hitch is the step up when tongue weight is heavy enough that you want it spread across the truck and trailer axles instead of hanging on the hitch alone. Check your owner's manual for when Ram calls for weight distribution on your configuration.

Fitment notes
Bumper and receiver hitches follow the body, not the engine. The 2018 Ram 1500 and the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic are the DS body; 2020-2023 trucks are the DT body, built only as Quad Cab or Crew Cab. A 2019 with the new DT body is not an EcoDiesel. Ball mounts and pulling hitches go by receiver size, so measure the opening before you pick a shank. If your 2020 or later truck shows no camera image in reverse, check for open rearview camera recalls before you hitch up; the remedies are software updates. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How do I figure out the drop I need?
Park the truck and trailer on level ground with the trailer sitting level. Measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening, then to the bottom of the coupler. The difference is the drop, or rise, the ball mount needs. An adjustable Tow & Stow lets you fine-tune it later.
Will a bumper hitch from a 2018 Ram 1500 fit my 2020?
No. The 2018 truck is the DS body and the 2020 is the DT body, and bumper and receiver hitches are built for one or the other. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic shares the DS fitment with the 2018.
Does the weight-distribution hitch let me tow more?
It does not raise Ram's rating, which tops out at 12,560 lb for a properly equipped 2020-2023 EcoDiesel and depends on cab, drive and axle. What it does is spread tongue load across the truck and trailer axles. Check your owner's manual for when Ram calls for one on your configuration.
My backup camera cuts out when I try to hitch. Is that a known issue?
Several recalls between 2020 and 2024 cover rearview camera and display faults on the Ram 1500 that can leave you with no image in reverse. The remedies are software updates, so have the dealer check your VIN before you assume it is a hitch or wiring problem.
