2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel Custom Tuning

Custom tuning hardware for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel, which right now means the HP Tuners MPVI4 interface. What every owner should know first: FCA's 2019 AEM reflash on 2014-2016 trucks is the only factory-authorized calibration change for this engine, so any custom work should start on a healthy truck and leave its emissions equipment fully intact.

Custom tuning on the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Custom tuning means a calibration built for one specific truck instead of a one-size file. On the EcoDiesel, that calibration has a lot to manage at once. A Bosch CP4.2 pump, gear-driven off the exhaust camshaft, feeds solenoid injectors on a common rail running up to 29,000 psi. A Garrett GTB2056VKL turbo sets boost with electronically actuated vanes. The ZF 8HP70 eight-speed shifts on adaptive control. And the cooled EGR, DPF regeneration and SCR dosing all have to keep doing their jobs. Whoever writes or loads a calibration for this truck has to respect every one of those systems.

Fix mechanical problems before you touch software

A calibration cannot fix a hardware fault, and this engine has a few known ones worth clearing first. A P0299 underboost code on the EcoDiesel usually comes from a soot-packed MAP sensor, a leaking EGR cooler or a cracked charge hose rather than the turbo. The EGR cooler falls under recall 19V-757 (VB1), and the CP4.2 pump on 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels is under NHTSA recall 22V-406 (FCA Z46). Have open recalls checked by VIN before you spend money on tuning, so you are not building on a part that is due to be replaced.

Factory calibration vs. custom work

If your 2014-2016 truck received the AEM, it carries a transferable extended emissions warranty: the longer of 10 years/120,000 miles from original sale or 4 years/48,000 miles from the update date. Know where that coverage stands before anyone changes your calibration. For a power add with paperwork behind it, the documented route on this engine is the Banks Derringer in-line module under CARB EO D-161-148, which conditions sensor signals instead of reflashing the controller. No ECM reflash tune with a CARB EO is documented for the EcoDiesel.

What we carry

This collection carries the HP Tuners MPVI4, the interface that links HP Tuners software on a computer to the truck through its diagnostic port. HP Tuners handles vehicle support and licensing, so confirm your model year and controller on their support list first. Tuning hardware for the other platforms we serve is in our tuners collection.

Fitment notes

Built for the 2014-2017 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel. Nothing mechanical changed on the engine at the 2017-2018 boundary, and it returned on the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Laramie Crew Cab. The 2020 and later DT-body EcoDiesel is a redesigned engine with different hardware. If you add a CARB-certified device, its EO only holds on an emissions-intact truck installed per the maker's instructions. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MPVI4 add power by itself?

No. It is an interface, the hardware that sits between a computer and the truck. What it does depends entirely on the software and the calibration used with it. On this truck, keep any work you do within the limits of a fully emissions-intact engine.

My 2015 got the AEM update and now feels slow off the line. Is that normal?

Many 2014-2016 owners reported more hesitation from a stop and lower mileage after the 2019 update. Those are owner reports; FCA, the EPA and CARB said average fuel economy did not change. If yours is also going into limp mode, showing a Service Electronic Throttle Control message or making black smoke, that points to an underboost problem such as a sooted MAP sensor or a boost leak, so get it diagnosed first.

Should I check recalls before custom tuning?

Yes. The CP4.2 high-pressure pump is under recall 22V-406 on 2014-2019 Ram 1500 EcoDiesels, and the EGR cooler is covered by recall 19V-757 (VB1). A dealer can look up open campaigns by VIN. Clearing those first means your calibration work starts on a truck with healthy fuel and EGR hardware.
