This page holds the rebuild and cooling side of the transmission catalog. The 68RFE behind every standard-output automatic 6.7L Cummins carries a factory rating of about 400 hp and 800 lb-ft, and it has one of the deepest aftermarkets of any heavy-duty truck automatic: valve-body upgrades, billet converters and clutch packs.
What fails and why
The 68RFE wear list is the separator plate, accumulators, solenoid pack, valve body, overdrive clutches and converter. Valve-bore wear causes hydraulic failures in gears 4-6, which shows up as overdrive clutch failure, pressure loss, or the truck dropping into neutral while driving. Owner complaints on 2014-2016 trucks add separator plate and accumulator defects and solenoid pack failures after the U29/U30 campaigns. That is why the valve body and overdrive section get most of the upgrade attention.
What we carry
BD Diesel covers the 68RFE internals: Stage 2 and Stage 4 Build-It kits with or without a torque converter, a transmission valve body, a billet input shaft, billet overdrive reaction plates, and Big Stack overdrive shaft and drum kits. BD also has Xtruded auxiliary coolers, a cooler electric fan and a high-idle kit, and a Gorilla Grip valve body is listed here too. Mishimoto has direct-fit and universal coolers, thermal bypass valves and a 2010-2012 cooler bypass kit. PPE offers bar-and-plate coolers, including a 2010-2012 cooler and A/C condenser kit, plus a thermal bypass valve. Fleece Performance Engineering has a 2013-2018 cooler and line kit. ATS Diesel Performance and XDP offer thermal bypass valve upgrades, and XDP adds a line pressure sensor. Anchor transmission mounts and a DNR Customs flex plate install kit round it out.
Fitment notes
Direct-fit coolers are split by year. Mishimoto lists separate coolers for 2010-2012, 2013-2014 and 2015-2018 trucks, and PPE splits at 2010-2012, 2013-2018 and 2015-2018. The thermal bypass valve upgrades are listed for 2013-2018. The BD valve body is listed for 2011-2018, the Build-It kits for 2007.5-2018, and the XDP line pressure sensor for 2007.5-2017 trucks with the 68RFE. Aisin and 68RFE parts never interchange. Why upgrade the 68RFE valve body?
Valve-bore wear is one of the 68RFE's main weak points, and it causes hydraulic failures in gears 4-6. Valve-body upgrades are one of the main aftermarket answers to the 4-6 clutch and bore-wear problems.
