Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel filtration on the 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The factory setup on the 6.7L Cummins starts with an engine-mounted filter on the driver side of the block, below the brake reservoir. That housing does more than hold an element. It integrates the water separator, the drain valve and the water-in-fuel sensor, Mopar 68065610AA on every year. For 2010-2012 trucks the factory engine filter is Mopar 68065608AB, crossed to Fleetguard FS43255, a 5-micron element, and it is the only filter on the truck. From 2013, Ram added a chassis-mounted filter, Mopar 68197867AB, on the frame rail near the tank, sitting over the rear driveshaft. Both filters are due every 15,000 miles or 12 months, or when the cluster tells you.
What fails and why
The engine filter's plastic cap is the weak link. It is hard to remove and commonly wears out, cracks or strips during service, which leads to fuel leaks at the housing and air in the fuel. Access gets worse on lifted trucks and on trucks with an aftermarket intake horn. On 2013-2018 trucks the chassis filter's steel base corrodes with age until it won't seal a new filter. Look for fuel weeping at the frame filter and water-in-fuel warnings. Because it sits in a tight spot over the driveshaft, many owners just skip it. The fuel heater lives in the same filter housing circuit, and its electrical connector is covered by recall 14V-635 on 2010-2014 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks built between March 27, 2009 and September 5, 2013. A melted connector at the filter housing means a fuel leak and a fire risk.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If you just want to service the truck, buy the correct factory-spec elements for your year and change both filters together. If you're tired of fighting the cap and the corroded base, there are three upgrade routes. Frame-mounted pump-and-filter systems add their own lift pump, filtration and water separation on the frame rail. Drop-in filter systems consolidate both factory filters into one serviceable unit at the front of the bed while keeping the factory in-tank lift pump and the water-in-fuel sensor. CAT filter conversions use an adapter so the truck runs a CAT 1R-0750 filter. A sump only comes into play with an external frame-mounted pump; the drop-in approaches keep the factory tank module and avoid cutting the tank.
What we carry
AirDog is here with its FP-100-4G and FP-150-4G air/fuel separation systems, the II-5G DF-100-5G, DF-165-5G and DF-220-5G systems, Raptor 4G pumps in 100 and 150 GPH, universal Raptor pumps, and the parts to keep them running: 10-micron and 2-micron replacement filters, the WS100 water separator and a low-pressure indicator light. FASS covers the Titanium Signature Series in standard, PLUS and No-Drop versions, the Drop-In Series fuel system, the XWS3002 Extreme Water Separator filter and its extended-length XL version, the PF3001XL particulate filter, and the Filter Pack and Filter Pack XL service sets. BD Diesel adds Venom lift pumps with filter and water separator plus a fuel distribution block. Fleece Performance Engineering offers fuel heater filter bases and an auxiliary heated fuel filter kit. For CAT conversions there's the G&R Diesel conversion kit and the XDP XD381 adapter with a CAT 1R-0750 filter. For more pump options, see our lift pumps page.
Fitment notes
Filter part numbers split three ways: 2007-2009 (Mopar 68061634AA, Fleetguard FS43258), 2010-2012 (68065608AB, FS43255) and 2013-2018, which add the 68197867AB chassis filter. The 2019-and-later chassis filter, 68436631AA, is a different part. BD Venom pumps split at 2013 as well, with one listed for 2005-2012 and one for 2013-2022. FASS drop-in filter part numbers change by generation: DIFSRAM1001 for 2010-2018 and DIFSRAM4001 for 2019-2023. AirDog and FASS replacement filters fit the system rather than the truck, so match them to the unit on your frame. Both CAT conversions are listed for 2010-2018. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs use different frames and filters than the pickups, so verify those by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my engine fuel filter cap crack?
It's plastic, it's hard to get off, and it commonly wears out or breaks during service. A damaged cap can leak fuel at the housing or pull air into the system. If you're fighting it every change, a drop-in filter system consolidates both factory filters into one serviceable unit at the front of the bed.
Do I have to change the chassis filter on my 2013-2018?
Yes. Both filters are on the same 15,000-mile or 12-month schedule. The chassis filter sits over the rear driveshaft, and that tight access is why so many get skipped. While you're under there, check the steel base for corrosion, because a corroded base won't seal a new filter.
Do I need a sump with a frame-mounted pump?
A sump only comes into play with an external frame-mounted pump, such as the AirDog air/fuel separation systems and FASS Titanium Signature Series on this page. If you'd rather not cut the tank, the drop-in in-tank pump and drop-in filter approaches keep the factory tank module. Call us and we'll talk through which setup fits how you use the truck.
What micron rating should I buy?
The factory 2010-2012 engine filter is a 5-micron element. AirDog replacement filters come in 10-micron and 2-micron versions with a separate WS100 water separator, and FASS sells water separator and particulate filters for its systems. Order the elements your system calls for.
