2010-2018 Ram 6.7L Cummins Charging & Starting Parts

This is the charging and starting page for the 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins: alternators, gear-reduction starters, heavy-duty cables, a battery heat shield and starting fluid. The one thing to know is how hard this truck leans on its batteries. The intake grid heater pulls about 225 amps on a cold start, so battery and cable condition matter more here than on a gas truck.

Charging and starting on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins

Every 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins runs two batteries, and it needs both. On a cold start the grid heater in the intake inlet pulls around 225 amps, and the same batteries then have to crank the engine. Dual batteries and clean terminals are a functional requirement on this engine, not a luxury. The charging side changed with the 2013 mid-cycle overhaul, which brought a redesigned electrical interface along with Uconnect 8.4 and keyless enter-and-go. For 2013, Ram offered a 220-amp alternator, and a dual-alternator setup was available from 2013 through 2018. That one option drives most of the fitment questions on this page, so find out whether your truck has one alternator or two before you shop.

What fails and why

The grid heater is where charging and starting meet on this engine. Its roughly 225-amp draw arcs at the heater terminal over time, and that arcing is what loosens the fastener. Weak batteries and corroded cables raise the current and heat at that joint. Heater codes P2609 or P0542 tend to show up before the fastener lets go, so treat either code as a reason to test the batteries and look hard at the cable ends.

Other problems belong to specific model years:

  • 2013, 220-amp alternator: recall 16V-739. The alternator could fail suddenly, stalling the truck or short-circuiting with a fire risk. Signs were a sudden loss of charging, a stall or a burning smell. The remedy was a revised unit.
  • 2012, WIN ignition module: owners report the truck shutting off after hitting a bump and losing power steering and brakes, at roughly 60,000 to 170,000 miles. These are owner complaints, not a recall, and owners say the problem can come back.
  • 2014, TIPM and wiring: owners report TIPM failures with random stalling and instrument-cluster blackouts, plus alternator wiring chafing on the oil filter. These are also owner reports.

Starters are the good news. Recall and complaint data for 2010-2018 show no starter failure pattern, so a starter on this truck is a normal wear item.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If your truck charges fine and you are replacing a worn part, match what is there and refresh the cables while you are in it. On a 2013 truck covered by the recall, the revised recall alternator is the OEM path. A high-output alternator earns its place when you have added electrical load to the truck. Two rules apply to any alternator swap: the unit has to clear the dual-alternator bracketry if your truck has it, and single- and dual-alternator trucks use different belts and brackets. The starters here are gear-reduction designs. Heavy-duty battery and alternator cables replace corroded factory ends, which matters on a circuit that carries grid-heater current. If grid-heater codes keep coming back, one compliant fix is a coil-heater intake plate, which cuts cold-start draw from about 225 amps to about 60 while keeping cold-start function. That is an intake part, not something sold on this page.

What we carry

This collection covers the circuit from battery to starter:

  • Alternators: the Mean Green MG1391SHD 375-amp high-output alternator and Mean Green 1391 high-output alternator, plus the XDP XD354 HD high-output alternator in wrinkle black.
  • Starters: the XDP XD259 HD gear reduction starter in wrinkle black and the Mean Green 9029 gear reduction starter, with the XDP XD534 black-phosphate starter bolt kit.
  • Cables: the XDP XD447 HD replacement battery cable set, XD421 HD alternator cable and XD422 HD high-output alternator cable.
  • Battery protection: the PPE 249002020 battery heat shield.
  • Cold-start help: Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid.

Fitment notes

These parts are listed for the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup with the 6.7L Cummins. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different frames, filters and exhaust routing, so verify chassis-cab fitment separately. Read the year range in each product title, because some run well past 2018 and some start later than 2010. The PPE heat shield lists 2016-2025, so 2010-2015 owners should confirm fit before ordering. For alternators and alternator cables, confirm single or dual alternator first. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a 6.7L Cummins Ram need two batteries?

Cold starts put about 225 amps through the grid heater circuit, and the same batteries then crank the engine. Two healthy batteries and clean terminals are what keep up with that load. Weak batteries and corroded cables also raise current and heat at the grid heater terminal, which is tied to that fastener working loose.

Is there a recall on the 2013 Ram 220-amp alternator?

Yes. Recall 16V-739 covered 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 220-amp alternator, which could fail suddenly and stall the truck or short-circuit with a fire risk. The remedy was a revised alternator. A Ram dealer can tell you by VIN whether the work was done.

Will a high-output alternator fit my truck?

It depends on whether you have one alternator or two. A dual-alternator setup was available on 2013-2018 trucks, and it uses different belts, brackets and clearances than a single-alternator truck. Any high-output unit has to clear that bracketry. Tell us which setup you have, or give us the VIN, and we will match it.

Do starters fail on these trucks?

Not in any pattern we can point to. Recall and complaint data for 2010-2018 show no starter failure trend, so treat the starter as a normal wear part. When one does wear out, the XDP and Mean Green gear-reduction starters here are listed for this engine, and the XDP starter bolt kit gives you fresh hardware.
