Call or Text (352) 722-5295Alternators on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins
The alternator on a 6.7L Cummins Ram has a bigger job than the one on a gas pickup. Every cold start sends about 225 amps through the grid heater circuit, and the alternator has to put that back into two batteries. A 220-amp alternator was offered on 2013 trucks, and a second alternator could be ordered on 2013-2018 trucks. The 2013 mid-cycle overhaul also brought a redesigned electrical interface with Uconnect 8.4 and keyless enter-and-go, so tell us the model year when you ask about fit.
What fails and why
The documented alternator failure on this platform is narrow and specific. 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 220-amp alternator were recalled under 16V-739 because the alternator could fail suddenly, stalling the truck or short-circuiting with a fire risk. The signs were a sudden loss of charging, a stall or a burning smell. The remedy was a revised unit.
The other pattern sits next to the alternator, not in it. Owners of 2014 trucks report alternator wiring chafing on the oil filter. If a 2014 truck shows charging trouble, look at that harness before you buy an alternator. Test the batteries and cables along with it, too: weak batteries and corroded cables raise current and heat at the grid heater terminal, and a new alternator will not fix either one.
Recall unit vs. high output
On a 2013 truck covered by recall 16V-739, the revised recall alternator is the OEM path, and a Ram dealer can confirm by VIN whether it was installed. Past that, the choice comes down to load. Every alternator on this page is a high-output design. That makes sense when the truck carries more electrical accessories than it left the factory with, or when you simply want more headroom. Whatever you choose, the unit has to clear the dual-alternator bracketry if your truck has it.
What we carry
- Mean Green MG1391SHD: 375-amp high-output alternator, listed for 2007.5-2023 6.7L Cummins.
- Mean Green 1391: high-output alternator, listed for 2007.5-2023 6.7L Cummins.
- XDP XD354: HD high-output alternator in wrinkle black, listed for 2007.5-2024 6.7L Cummins.
XDP's HD alternator cables, the XD421 and the high-output XD422, are in our charging and starting parts and pair naturally with a new high-output unit.
Fitment notes
These alternators are listed for the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup with the 6.7L Cummins. Single- and dual-alternator trucks use different belts, brackets and intake-side clearances, so confirm your layout before ordering. Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs share the engine but use different frames and routing, so verify chassis-cab fitment separately. When in doubt, verify by VIN or call us.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Ram has dual alternators?
Dual alternators were an available option on 2013-2018 trucks. Open the hood and count the alternators, or give us the VIN and we will check it. It matters because the two layouts use different belts, brackets and intake-side clearances.
Does the 2013 alternator recall apply to my truck?
Recall 16V-739 covers 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the 220-amp alternator. The original unit could fail suddenly, stalling the truck or short-circuiting with a fire risk, and the remedy was a revised alternator. If you have a 2013 with that alternator, check by VIN with a Ram dealer before you buy anything.
What does a 375-amp alternator get me?
The Mean Green MG1391SHD is rated at 375 amps in its listing, well above the 220-amp alternator Ram offered for 2013. That headroom suits a truck carrying added electrical load. It still has to fit your bracket layout, so confirm single or dual alternator first.
