Call or Text (352) 722-5295Differentials on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins
Every 6.7L Cummins Ram in this range runs American Axle differentials. On 4x4 trucks the front is the AAM 9.25 solid axle Ram has used since 2003, and from 2013 it works with a front-axle disconnect. The rear is the AAM 11.5 on the 2010-2013 2500 and 3500 and on the 2014-2018 2500, while some later 3500s carry the larger 11.8. The differential fluid spec is SAE 75W-90 or 75W-85 GL-5 synthetic, changed every 15,000 miles or 12 months on the severe schedule through 2017 and every 20,000 miles on 2018 trucks.
What goes wrong
The differentials are not a known trouble spot on these pickups. The failure on file is a single owner report: a 2015 3500 whose differential seized after an oil change, with howl and lockup as the symptoms. Treat that as a caution about service, not a design flaw. What you control here is the gear oil, how it is filled and the seal between the cover and the housing.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Going stock means factory-spec fluid, a fresh gasket and the original cover back on. Going aftermarket usually starts with the cover. Finned aluminum covers add fluid capacity and cooling, and along with re-gearing they are the documented upgrade path for trucks that tow or run larger tires. If you want both axles to match, BD Diesel sells front-and-rear cover packs for early and late trucks. Re-gearing is a bigger job with its own parts, so call the shop if you are weighing it.
What we carry
Covers come from PPE (heavy-duty cast aluminum, front and rear), Mag-Hytec (14-bolt and 12-bolt fronts, standard and CS rears), BD Diesel (single covers and front-and-rear packs), WCFab (an AAM 11.5 rear cover) and Banks Power (the Ram-Air Differential Cover Kit). For the install there is a PPE rear cover gasket, a WCFab rear cover bolt kit and an ATS Diesel Performance drain plug for ATS pans and covers. Gear oil comes from Lucas Oil, Hot Shot's Secret and Royal Purple, in grades from 75W-90 up to 85W-140.
Fitment notes
Front covers are 4x4-only and split by bolt count: 14-bolt through 2012 on the 3500 and 2013 on the 2500, 12-bolt after that, per the listings. Rear covers are listed for the AAM 11.5, and rear gear and overhaul kits split at 2013/2014 and between the 11.5 and 11.8, so confirm your rear axle by its tag or ring-gear size rather than the model year. The 2014-2018 2500 has a coil-spring rear, and some covers are made specifically for it. Chassis cabs need their own fitment check. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both a front and a rear differential cover?
Only 4x4 trucks have a front differential, so a 2WD Ram needs just the rear. On a 4x4 you can do one axle or both; BD Diesel's front-and-rear packs cover both in a single order, with separate packs for early and late trucks.
How often should I change differential fluid on a 2010-2018 Ram 6.7L?
On the severe-service schedule, every 15,000 miles or 12 months for 2010-2017 trucks and every 20,000 miles for 2018. The spec is SAE 75W-90 or 75W-85 GL-5 synthetic.
Will the rear cover from a 2012 Ram fit my 2016 2500?
Both trucks use the AAM 11.5 rear, so many covers are listed for both, but the 2016 2500 has the five-link coil rear. Some covers come in versions built for coil-spring 2500s, like the Mag-Hytec CS and the BD Diesel RCS, so match the cover to your rear suspension as well as your axle.
