The 6.7L Cummins arrived in mid-2007 with 650 lb-ft behind the 68RFE automatic and 610 lb-ft with the G56 manual, along with the first Cummins pickup VGT turbo and its built-in exhaust brake. The chassis around it is the third-generation Ram HD carried over from the 2003-2007 trucks, so a lot of towing hardware spans 2003-2009. The factory hitch is present on most 2008 2500 and 3500 pickups, and aftermarket Class V receivers mount beneath it without frame drilling. Seven-way trailer wiring is factory on most 2500 and 3500 pickups too. What these trucks do not have is a factory puck system in the bed, so gooseneck and fifth-wheel setups go in on frame brackets and base rails.
Where towing shows the weak spots
Towing is where this platform's soft spots come out, and many owners report the same three. The 68RFE draws complaints about not holding gears with a trailer behind it, which shows up as hunting shifts. Stop-and-go trailer work loads the DPF, so you see more regen messages. Brake rotors judder, which you feel as pulsation in the pedal. None of that is a reason not to tow. It is a reason to plan transmission cooling and brake service around how hard you work the truck. Factory setup vs. upgrade
If you pull a bumper-pull trailer off the factory receiver, a good adjustable ball mount may be all you need. Match the shank to your receiver and the drop to your trailer so it rides level. For a heavy bumper-pull trailer, a weight distribution hitch is the next step. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers put the load over the rear axle, and that is where air helper springs and an onboard compressor earn their keep. They work with the rear leaf packs, and air assist is the standard recommendation for heavy towing on this chassis. Short-bed (6.25-ft) Quad Cab and Mega Cab trucks need a slider fifth wheel; long beds do not.

Fitment notes
These trucks were sold as the Dodge Ram, in ST, SXT, SLT, TRX4 Off-Road and Laramie trims; vendors list them as Ram. Pickup and cab-and-chassis receivers are different parts because the frame width and drilling differ, and the 4500/5500 chassis cabs differ again. Read the year range on each BHP receiver: the stock bumper and behind-roll-pan receivers are listed for 2003-2018, the bed-below-roll-pan receiver for 2003-2009. Check whether your truck has the factory bumper or a roll pan before you order. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel kits mount to the frame, and the right kit number depends on your exact truck, so verify by VIN or call the shop.
Frequently asked questions
How much can my 2008 Ram 2500 or 3500 tow?
It depends on the exact truck. Ratings change with cab, bed, axle ratio, 2500 vs 3500 and single or dual rear wheels, so use the figure on the door-jamb sticker and in the owner's manual rather than a generic maximum. Your receiver, ball mount and ball carry their own ratings too, and the lowest one in the chain is your limit.
Does my truck already have a hitch?
Most 2008 2500 and 3500 pickups left the factory with one. Aftermarket Class V receivers mount beneath the factory hitch without frame drilling, and most of these pickups also have factory seven-way wiring. Cab-and-chassis trucks are a different story and need receivers made for their frame.
Do I need a slider fifth wheel on a short bed?
Yes, if you have the 6.25-ft bed on a Quad Cab or Mega Cab. The short bed puts the hitch close to the cab, and a slider gives the trailer room in tight turns. Trucks with the 8-ft bed do not need one.
Should I add air bags for fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing?
For heavy pin weight, air assist is the standard recommendation on these leaf-sprung trucks. Air helper springs on the rear leaf packs plus an onboard compressor let you add support when you hook up and let it out when you drop the trailer. The Air Lift controllers and WirelessONE and WirelessAIR systems here handle the inflation side.
