Call or Text (352) 722-5295Engine components on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
The bottom end of this engine is an induction-hardened forged crank, powdered-metal connecting rods and cast aluminum pistons in a grey cast-iron block. Up top is a cast-iron head with a cam-in-block OHV valvetrain: four valves per cylinder, solid roller lifters and a chilled ductile-iron camshaft. Valve lash is 0.010 in intake and 0.026 in exhaust, checked at 150,000 miles. This page is where the pieces of that engine live, from the seals at each end of the crank to the rockers, pushrods and valve bridges on top of the Cummins.
What fails and why
The headline failure on the 6.7L is the head gasket. It runs higher cylinder pressure than the 5.9L, and the risk rises sharply once boost goes up. Coolant pushed into the overflow bottle, bubbles in the degas tank under load and white steam from the exhaust are the signs to watch. The gasket sets on this page cover that job. The other item to check on an early truck is a safety recall, not wear: on 2007-2008 6.7L trucks the engine-mounted silencer pad could sag onto the EGR cooler and start a fire, and NHTSA recall 08V641000 added a support bracket to stop it.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a leak or a rebuild on a stock truck, genuine Cummins seals, the Cummins standard piston kit and Mahle gasket sets put it back to factory spec. If the truck runs a larger turbo or sees high rpm use, upgraded valve springs are the typical next step, and XDP offers a high boost valve spring set and a performance valve spring and retainer set. XDP also makes HD rocker arms, a rocker arm trunnion set, billet valve bridges and street performance pushrods for builds that need a stronger valvetrain. If you only need to replace a worn balancer, XDP's XD703 is a stock-replacement unit.
What we carry
Mahle supplies rear main seals and a rear main seal set, the lower engine gasket set, the timing gear case housing gasket, the timing cover seal, cylinder head gasket sets and head sets. Cummins genuine parts include the standard piston kit, the upper engine gasket kit, the oil pump, the rocker box housing, the camshaft gear, a cable-style dipstick, and front and rear crank seals, some with wear or repair sleeves. XDP adds a camshaft position sensor, bolt-on freeze plugs, a timing cover bolt kit, a harmonic balancer and balancer bolt set, valvetrain parts and the X220 head stud kit. You will also find parts from Hamilton Cams, Fleece Performance Engineering and BD Diesel, a Dorman timing gear case housing kit and clutch fan blade, an Alliant Power oil, fuel and coolant temperature sensor, a Mishimoto replacement engine oil cooler, a Banks Power engine cover with a billet oil cap, Gator Fasteners hardware, and an Anchor engine mount and driveshaft center support bearing.
Fitment notes
Read the year range in every title. Some parts here span 1989-2018 across the 5.9L and 6.7L, while others, such as the Cummins piston kit, the Mahle cylinder head gasket set and the XDP XD703 balancer, are 6.7L parts from 2007.5 on. Cummins offers front and rear crank seals with and without wear or repair sleeves, so look at the crank's sealing surface before choosing. XDP freeze plugs come in rear and side versions, and the Anchor engine mount is a right-side mount. Pickups and 3500 chassis cabs do not always share hard parts, so verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2007.5-2008 Ram need the silencer pad recall?
Check it. NHTSA recall 08V641000 (Chrysler H34) added a support bracket because the engine-mounted silencer pad on 2007-2008 6.7L trucks could sag onto the EGR cooler and start a fire. If the bracket is missing, have the recall done before other engine work.
What are the valve lash specs on the 6.7L Cummins?
0.010 in intake and 0.026 in exhaust, with a check and adjustment at 150,000 miles. The engine uses solid roller lifters, so lash is set by hand rather than taken up by hydraulic lifters.
When do I need upgraded valve springs?
Upgraded springs are typical once a larger turbo goes on or the engine sees high rpm use. XDP's high boost spring set and performance spring and retainer set are both listed for 1998.5-2024 5.9L and 6.7L engines, so they cover this truck.
Should I buy a rear main seal with or without a sleeve?
Cummins lists it both ways: 6596248 by itself and 3926126 with a repair sleeve, and Mahle offers rear main seals and a rear main seal set. Which one you need depends on the condition of the crank where the seal rides, so inspect it once the old seal is out.
