Call or Text (352) 722-5295Differentials on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
Your Cummins-powered Ram has two differentials if it is a 4x4 and one if it is a 2WD. American Axle built both: a 9.25-inch front on 4x4 trucks and an 11.5-inch rear with 30-spline shafts. These are the same axles the heavy-duty Rams have used since 2003, so a cover listed for 2003-2013 or 2003-2018 Cummins trucks covers your years. That is the reason the 5.9L and 6.7L trucks share so much of this page.
What wears and what to watch
No widespread AAM axle defect shows up for these years, and the owner complaints on record lean toward noise, vibration and seal leaks rather than broken parts. That points to the basics. Keep the oil at the right level and grade, replace the cover gasket when you open the axle, and watch the cover flange for seepage. The front 9.25 holds 2.45 quarts and the rear 11.5 holds 3.8 to 4.2 quarts, and the severe-service change interval is 15,000 miles or 12 months.
Factory-style or aftermarket cover
If the factory cover is straight and dry, a new gasket and the right gear oil is all the axle needs. When the cover is bent, seeping, or you just want something stouter, the aftermarket covers here are the step up: finned Mag-Hytec covers and synthetic gear oils are the catalogued upgrades for these trucks, and PPE's covers are heavy-duty cast aluminum. For the rear, 75W-90 full synthetic is the spec, and 75W-140 synthetic is the choice for heavy towing.

Fitment notes
Front covers fit 4x4 trucks only; 2WD Rams use a different front end. SRW and DRW 3500s share the AAM 11.5 rear but have different hubs and track, so confirm by VIN for anything beyond the cover. Several rear covers and the WCFab bolt kit also list Duramax fitment; on your Ram, go by the Cummins years in the title.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a front differential cover on a 2WD Ram?
No. The AAM 9.25 front axle is on 4x4 2500 and 3500 trucks only. A 2WD truck uses a different front end, so only the rear cover, gasket and gear oil apply to it.
Will a cover made for a 5.9L Ram fit my 6.7L?
In most cases, yes. The 2003-2009 heavy-duty Rams use the same AAM 9.25 front and 11.5 rear regardless of engine, so axle covers follow the chassis. Check that the year range in the product title includes your model year before you order.
Should I run 75W-90 or 75W-140 in the rear?
The rear AAM 11.5 spec is 75W-90 full synthetic, and 75W-140 synthetic is listed for heavy towing. If the truck pulls a heavy trailer regularly, the heavier grade is the documented choice. Both grades are on this page from several brands.
How much oil does each axle hold?
The front AAM 9.25 holds 2.45 quarts and the rear AAM 11.5 holds 3.8 to 4.2 quarts. The severe-service change interval is 15,000 miles or 12 months.
