Intake accessories on the 2007.5-2009 RAM 6.7L Cummins

The intake on this engine is more than a filter and a tube. Sensors read the air coming in, gaskets seal the horn and manifold, and clamps hold the boots between the turbo, the intercooler and the intake horn. T-bolt clamps, pre-filters and filter wraps all play a supporting role. The grid heater plate in the intake horn is the only cold-start aid, since this engine has no glow plugs, and it is wired through a relay and fusible link.

What fails and why

The grid heater stud and nut can loosen with age and heat and drop into the intake. The engine sits at a 5-degree rake, so the hardware rolls back to cylinder #6, with results that run from a misfire to a destroyed engine. Factory intercooler boots crack and blow off under boost, and the cold-side boots are held by crimped bands that must be cut to replace. On the filter side, a neglected or poorly sealed filter lets dust reach the VGT compressor wheel.

Fitment notes

Most sensors and gaskets here are listed for 2007.5-2018 6.7L, and a few span 2002-2010 or 2003-2018 5.9 and 6.7L, so read the range in each title. The Mishimoto boot kit fits 2007-2009 6.7L only. The Banks pre-filter wrap is made for Banks Ram-Air filters 42148 and 42178, and the Fleece pre-filter is made for the Fleece 2nd Gen swap filter, so match a wrap to the filter you actually run. Shutdown valves come in more than one size; match the valve to your intake tube. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Why does the Mishimoto boot kit come with its own clamps?

The factory cold-side boots are held by crimped metal bands that have to be cut off to remove the boots, so they do not go back on. Mishimoto's factory-fit boot kit includes eight constant-tension T-bolt clamps. BD Diesel high-torque hose clamps and the S&B silicone coupler with clamps cover other joints.
