Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The 5.9L holds 12 quarts with the filter. The factory filter is a spin-on Fleetguard LF16035, and the drain plug is Mopar 05080631AB. The factory oil recommendation is 15W-40 when temperatures stay above 0 F, or 5W-40 synthetic for all temperatures. Service intervals are 15,000 miles or 12 months in normal use and 7,500 miles or 6 months in severe service. The pump draws through a pickup tube in the pan and feeds the filter housing and an engine oil cooler mounted to the block.
What fails and why
The problem to understand on this engine is fuel dilution. A leaking or failed injector can put diesel into the oil if the truck is driven on it. The signs are an oil level that keeps rising, oil that looks thin, white smoke and a dead miss. Changing the oil will not fix it. The injector has to be found and replaced, then the oil and filter changed. Beyond that, the parts on this page are service items: filters at every change, and gaskets, pans, pumps and coolers when the engine is opened up or resealed.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For most trucks, the factory approach is the right one: the correct oil, a good filter and the right interval. Genuine Cummins oil pumps, oil coolers, pans and filter housings, along with Mahle and Alliant Power parts, keep the system to factory spec. The upgrade side is small and practical: a Mishimoto magnetic drain plug, an XDP pan bolt kit or a PPE MicroPure XR filter. For trucks that work hard, the Turbo Diesel Register injector guide prefers a CI-4+ oil changed at 4,000-4,500 miles instead of the 15,000-mile factory normal interval. That is a choice about how you use the truck, not a factory requirement.

Genuine Cummins supplies the 5291050 oil pump, 3959031 oil cooler, 3949769 oil pan, 5289557 filter housing, 3949692 pickup tube and pan and cooler gaskets. Mahle has the OC1001 oil filter plus pan and oil cooler gaskets. You will also find the AP63648 oil pump from Alliant Power, the MicroPure XR filter from PPE, a magnetic drain plug and replacement oil cooler from Mishimoto, a replacement oil pan from Dorman, XDP's pan bolt kit and X-Factor additive, and parts from WCFab and ATS Diesel Performance. More engine parts are in our Cummins parts section.
Fitment notes
Engine oil and additives are not year-specific; the hard parts are. The Cummins 3949769 oil pan and 3958165 pan gasket are listed for 2003-2007 5.9L engines, while the Dorman 264-470 pan is listed for 2003-2012. For the oil cooler, the Cummins 4895742 cooler-to-block gasket is listed for 2003-2007 5.9L, and the Mahle GS33485 gasket set for 2006-2018, so check your year. The Mishimoto magnetic drain plug is listed for 1989-1993 and 2002-2013. On 2007 trucks, make sure the engine is the 5.9L and not the 6.7L that replaced it during the model year. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
What oil does a 2004.5-2007 5.9L Cummins use?
The factory calls for 15W-40 when temperatures stay above 0 F, or 5W-40 synthetic for all temperatures. The engine takes 12 quarts with the filter. Hot Shot's Secret offers both 15W-40 and 5W-40 oils here, and Lucas Oil offers several 15W-40s.
How often should I change the oil on my 5.9L?
The factory interval is 15,000 miles or 12 months in normal service and 7,500 miles or 6 months in severe service. For hard-used trucks, the Turbo Diesel Register injector guide prefers CI-4+ oil changed at 4,000-4,500 miles.
Why is my oil level rising between changes?
A leaking injector can dilute the oil with diesel. Look for white smoke, thin oil and a dead miss along with the rising level. That is an injector repair, not an oil-system fault, so find and replace the injector, then change the oil and filter.
