Call or Text (352) 722-5295Monitor sensors for the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins
A digital monitor on these trucks plugs into the OBD-II port and pulls rail pressure, boost and coolant temperature from the ECM. Exhaust gas temperature and lift-pump pressure are not ECM readings, so they take add-on hardware: a pyrometer probe for EGT and a pressure sender for fuel. These trucks have no factory readout for either one, which is why these sensors matter on the 5.9L Cummins.
Why these two readings matter
EGT. The ceiling for 2004.5-2007 engines is about 1,500 F, and TDR guidance is to stay under about 1,300 F on long pulls. A truck making more fuel than stock on the factory HE351CW turbo can run past that when towing or at altitude. After repeated excursions, the first thing that usually lets go is a dropped valve seat, which shows up as a sudden miss or knock.
Fuel pressure. Lift-pump pressure falling below about 5 psi at full power is the early sign of CP3 starvation and injector damage. Without a gauge, the first clue is usually a hard start, a long crank or a P0087 code.
Installing them right
The EGT probe goes in the exhaust manifold, ahead of the turbo. Fuel-pressure senders should be mounted remotely with a snubber, and an electric sender keeps diesel out of the cab. If you run an aftermarket electric lift pump, a fuel-pressure reading is the recommended companion. If you would rather have it done, we install what we sell at our shop in Wildwood, FL.
What we carry
- Edge Products 98620 EAS EGT kit, the Daily Driver/Tow kit.
- Edge Products 98607 EAS pressure sensor, 0-100 psi. That range takes in both the lift-pump side, where the warning line is about 5 psi, and factory boost, which is electronically limited to about 30-31 psi on these trucks.
These sensors are part of Edge's EAS accessory line. Check each product page for which Edge displays they connect to and how the pressure sensor is meant to be set up.
Fitment notes
The 2006 CAN-bus ECM change affects monitor compatibility, so pair these sensors with an Edge display that fits your year. On 2004.5 trucks the lift pump is engine-mounted; from 2005 it sits in the tank. Check where yours is before you plan the fuel-pressure tap. The 2007 model year also includes 6.7L trucks built after January 1, 2007, so confirm your engine and verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an EGT kit if my truck is stock?
It earns its keep when you tow or have added fuel, since that is when high readings show up. But these trucks have no factory EGT readout at all, so a probe is the only way to know where you stand. The guidance is a 1,500 F ceiling and under about 1,300 F on long pulls.
Where should the fuel-pressure sender go?
On the low-pressure fuel side, mounted remotely with a snubber, not in the cab. An electric sender keeps diesel out of the cab entirely. On 2005-2007 trucks the lift pump is in the tank, while 2004.5 trucks have it on the engine, so check your layout first.
Can a pressure sensor warn me before a P0087 code?
That is the point of it. Without a gauge, a P0087 code or a hard start is often the first sign that lift-pump pressure has been sagging. With a sender you can watch it: below about 5 psi at full power is the warning line for CP3 starvation and injector damage.
