Call or Text (352) 722-5295Transmission pans on the 2003-2004 Ram 5.9L Cummins
Behind the Cummins, 2003-2004 automatic trucks run the 48RE, with a brief early-2003 run of the 47RE behind the standard-output engine. The 48RE is a 727-family TorqueFlite, and both units take ATF+4 only. The 48RE holds 14.5 to 16.5 quarts dry, but a normal pan drop and filter change replaces only about 4 quarts, so the pan is where you service the unit and where you add capacity.
What fails and why
The builders' list of 47RE/48RE weak points includes the low-volume pan and cavitation from the open-style filter, along with soft oil-pump gears and cast servos. Diesel Hub notes the 48RE forces protective downshifts once fluid passes 260F while towing in overdrive; dark fluid and gear hunting on grades are the signs. Burnt fluid on the dipstick can also point to a worn intermediate band, which builders say stretches and loses material by 120,000 to 150,000 miles.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If your factory pan only weeps at the gasket, a new gasket may be all it needs, and the MAHLE W39003TC fits the 47RE and 48RE. If the truck tows, step up to a deep pan. Builders pair a deep finned pan with an auxiliary cooler as the temperature fix for the 48RE, and the pans here run from deep to extra deep, so you can pick how much added capacity you want.
What we carry
We carry deep pans from Pacific Performance Engineering (PPE), BD Diesel (Deep Sump) and XDP (the XD450 Xtra Deep aluminum pan for the 47RE/48RE), plus the 727-D Deep and 727-DD Extra Deep pans from Mag-Hytec. MAHLE supplies the W39003TC pan gasket. ATS Diesel Performance rounds it out with a replacement drain plug that fits ATS pans and differential covers.
Fitment notes
The pans here are cataloged for the automatics behind the 5.9L Cummins going back to 1989, so the same pan fits the 2003-2004 47RE and 48RE. They fit automatic trucks only, not the NV5600 manual. Use ATF+4 only, and since a deeper pan holds more fluid, fill to the dipstick rather than by the stock quart count. Verify by VIN if you are not sure which transmission you have.
Frequently asked questions
How much fluid does a 48RE service take?
About 4 quarts on a standard pan drop and filter change, out of 14.5 to 16.5 quarts dry, per Diesel Hub. Use ATF+4 only. A deep pan adds to that number, so top off to the dipstick.
Should I adjust the bands when I drop the pan?
Band adjustment is part of regular 47RE/48RE service. Diesel Hub's 48RE page groups fluid, filter and band adjustment every 30,000 miles, while its general maintenance schedule lists 100,000 miles for ATF+4. If your truck tows, ask us which interval fits how you use it.
Is a deep pan enough to keep a towing 48RE cool?
It helps, but builders pair the deep finned pan with an auxiliary cooler for temperature control. If you see protective downshifts on grades in overdrive, that can be the 48RE reacting to fluid above 260F, and capacity alone may not cure it.
