Call or Text (352) 722-5295Bumper hitches on the 2003-2004 RAM 5.9L Cummins
A conventional bumper-pull hitch uses a ball and socket joint. The trailer coupler drops over a ball, the ball sits on a ball mount, and the ball mount slides into a receiver bolted to the truck. Each of those parts has its own rating, and the lowest one is your limit. The High Output 5.9L Cummins makes 555 lb-ft, but the hitch hardware, the trailer balance and the door-jamb ratings are what set your limit. Load the trailer about 60/40, with the heavier share ahead of the trailer axles, and plan the trailer wiring and brake controller as part of the receiver install.
What we carry
- Big Hitch Products receivers: behind-roll-pan hidden receivers in 2 in (BHP10012) and 2.5 in (BHP10032), a bed-below-roll-pan 2.5 in receiver (BHP10033), a stock-bumper 2.5 in receiver (BHP10035), and 2 in and 2.5 in adjustable pulling hitches (BHP2000 and BHP2001).
- B&W Trailer Hitches ball mounts: Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts with 2, 2.5 and 3 in shanks and drops from 2.5 to 9 in, in standard, pintle and MultiPro/MultiFlex versions, plus the BMTT31004 triple tow ball mount and heavy-duty ball mounts.
- Weight distribution: the B&W WDHK4500 weight distribution hitch for heavier bumper-pull trailers.
Choosing a receiver and mount
Start at the back of your truck. If it still wears a rear bumper, look at the stock-bumper receiver. If the bumper has been swapped for a roll pan, the behind-roll-pan hidden receivers keep the receiver out of sight, and the bed-below-roll-pan style is another way to mount under a roll pan. Next, match the ball mount shank to your receiver opening: 2 in, 2.5 in or 3 in. Then pick a drop that lets the trailer ride level. Pintle versions add a pintle hook for trailers that couple to one. A level trailer also depends on a level truck; if the rear sags under tongue weight, deal with the sag too.
Fitment notes
Several receivers here are listed across a range of years, such as 2003-2018 or 2003-2009, and roll-pan receivers assume a roll pan is installed. Read each listing's years and engine, and verify by VIN. Ball mounts are not truck-specific, but the shank must match your receiver. Browse our full hitch lineup if you need parts for more than one truck.
Frequently asked questions
How much drop do I need on my ball mount?
Park on level ground with the trailer level. Measure from the ground to the top of your receiver opening, then from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. The difference is the drop you need. The B&W Tow & Stow mounts here come in drops from 2.5 in to 9 in.
What does a weight distribution hitch do?
It uses spring bars to shift part of the tongue weight forward to the truck's front axle and back to the trailer axles, so the rear of the truck doesn't squat as hard. On a heavy bumper-pull trailer that helps with the nose-high stance and poor steering that rear sag causes. Your hitch ratings and the door-jamb label still set the limits.
Can I use a 2.5 in ball mount in a 2 in receiver?
No. The shank has to match the receiver opening, which is why the B&W mounts and the Big Hitch pulling hitches come in separate 2 in and 2.5 in versions, with 3 in shanks on some B&W mounts. Check your receiver size before you order.
