1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Turbo Parts

Turbochargers and turbo parts for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins. These trucks left the factory with a single wastegated Holset, and which one you have depends on both year and transmission. Know that before you order, and know that the HY35W is often misidentified as an HE341.

The turbo on the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The 24-valve runs one wastegated Holset. The HX35W was fitted to 1998.5-1999 trucks and to manual-transmission trucks. The HY35W went on 2000-2002 automatics. Fitment splits by year and transmission, so check what is bolted to your engine before you buy a replacement. On 2001-2002 trucks, a J-hook wastegate control upgrade is noted for managing wastegate boost.

Charge air leaves the turbo through rubber boots to a front-mounted air-to-air intercooler, then on to the intake. Those boots matter as much as the turbo does, as you will see below.

What fails and why

  • Boost leaks. On second-gen trucks, low power is often a cracked or slipped intercooler boot, not the turbo. The truck feels doggish, smokes and runs high EGT.
  • Wear. On high-mileage HX35W and HY35W turbos, the service items are compressor-wheel blade erosion from poor air filtration, oil-seal wear on the turbine shaft and journal-bearing wear. Look for oil in the intake or intercooler, shaft play, a whistle or lost boost.
  • P0234. A boost elbow from a power package raises wastegate pressure and commonly sets P0234, turbo boost limit exceeded, sometimes with a defuel.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The stock turbo is adequate at stock power. Once injectors and a tuner go on, it becomes the ceiling, and that is where drop-in upgrades and compound kits come in. Match the turbo to your fueling and tuning, not to a horsepower number, and fix fuel supply before you add power. Keep pre-turbo EGT under 1,250 F, with the pyrometer probe in the manifold. Silicone boots with spring-loaded clamps stop the chronic boot blow-off.

What we carry

For a straight replacement, XDP Xpressor new stock-replacement turbos are split by year range, so match the part number to your truck. Upgrades include the Fleece Performance Engineering Cheetah HX35, the Calibrated Power Solutions Stealth STR and HX35 Stealth 64, Banks Power Quick Turbo systems with or without a boost gauge, and the ATS Diesel Performance Aurora 3000/4000/5000 turbo system. ATS also builds the Aurora compound system.

Service and install parts include MAHLE inlet and mounting gaskets, Fleece oil feed lines, fittings and an HX35 install kit, and a BD Diesel turbo mounting kit, clamps and the Cool Down Timer 2. There are turbo blankets from PPE, Mishimoto and ATS, Turbosmart constant tension clamps, a Dynomite Diesel boost elbow, Calibrated Power Stealth Boost Tester kits and a Mishimoto radiator and transmission cooler bundle. Turbos for every platform are on our turbos page, and the Cummins hub covers the rest of the engine.

Fitment notes

These are Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks; no second-gen 1500 had the Cummins. Several listings here cover wider ranges such as 1994-2002 or 1994-2007, so confirm the version for a 24-valve. Gaskets are flange-specific, in T3, T4 and T6 styles, and many aftermarket turbos use an HX40-style downpipe flange that changes downpipe and exhaust brake fitment. On a California-registered truck, confirm a CARB EO for any performance part, since CARB approval requires each product to be independently tested. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have an HX35W or an HY35W?

The HX35W was fitted to 1998.5-1999 trucks and to manual-transmission trucks. The HY35W went on 2000-2002 automatics. The HY35W is often misidentified as an HE341, so look at the turbo itself before ordering, or call us with your VIN.

My truck feels doggish and smokes. Is the turbo bad?

Check for boost leaks first. On these trucks a cracked or slipped intercooler boot is the classic cause of low power, smoke and high EGT. A boost tester that pressurizes the intake side makes the leak easy to find.

Why did P0234 show up after I added a boost elbow?

A boost elbow raises wastegate pressure, and on a stock calibration that commonly sets P0234, turbo boost limit exceeded. The truck may defuel. Treat boost changes as part of a matched setup with fueling and tuning.

Will my exhaust brake fit an aftermarket turbo?

It depends on the turbo outlet. A turbo-mount brake replaces the cast elbow behind a stock-style turbo. Many aftermarket turbos use an HX40-style downpipe flange with no cast elbow, and those need an inline brake.

When should I go bigger than stock?

When the fueling outgrows the factory Holset. Once injectors and a tuner go on, the stock turbo becomes the ceiling. Fix fuel supply first, match the turbo to the fueling and tuning, and keep pre-turbo EGT under 1,250 F.
