Not sure it fits your truck?
Our Wildwood, FL techs will confirm the right part for your build before you buy.
Call or Text (352) 722-5295Drop-in turbochargers for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins, from new stock replacements to larger single-turbo upgrades. Start with which Holset your truck came with: the HX35W on 1998.5-1999 and manual trucks, the HY35W on 2000-2002 automatics. Order by year and transmission, not by year alone.
Drop-in turbos for the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins
A drop-in turbo bolts into the factory location in place of the single wastegated Holset. Options for this engine run from stock reman HX35W and HY35W units to larger singles. The HY35W is often misidentified as an HE341, so confirm what is on the engine before you buy. On 2001-2002 trucks, a J-hook wastegate control upgrade is also noted for managing wastegate boost.
Replace or upgrade?
If the truck is stock and the turbo is worn out, a stock replacement is the straightforward fix; the factory turbo is adequate at stock power. Wear on these turbos shows up at high mileage as oil in the intake or intercooler, shaft play, a whistle or lost boost. Before you condemn the turbo, rule out a cracked or slipped intercooler boot, the classic cause of low power and smoke on second-gen trucks. If you have added injectors and a tuner, the stock turbo becomes the ceiling and a larger drop-in makes sense. Match it to the fueling and tuning, and keep pre-turbo EGT under 1,250 F.

Fitment notes
Several listings cover 1994-2002 or 1994-2007, so confirm the version for a 24-valve. Many aftermarket turbos use an HX40-style downpipe flange that eliminates the cast elbow. A turbo-mount exhaust brake bolts on in place of that elbow behind a stock-style turbo, so behind an HX40-flange turbo you need an inline brake. On a California-registered truck, confirm a CARB EO for any performance turbo. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Which XDP turbo fits my truck?
XDP splits its stock replacements by year range: 1998.5-2000, 1999-2000, 1999-2002 and 2000-2002. The factory turbo changed by year and by transmission, so check the exact application on the product page. Or give us your VIN and transmission and we will match it.
Is the HY35W the same as an HE341?
No. The HY35W is often misidentified as an HE341. Factory 2000-2002 automatics used the HY35W, while 1998.5-1999 trucks and manual trucks used the HX35W. Check the turbo on your engine before you order a replacement.
Do I need more fuel to use a bigger drop-in?
Match the turbo to the fueling and tuning you have, not to a horsepower number. The stock turbo is adequate at stock power and becomes the limit once injectors and a tuner go on. Watch pre-turbo EGT and keep it under 1,250 F.
