1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Custom Tuning

Custom tuning for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins. Custom here means a tune set up around your truck's fuel system, transmission and job instead of one fixed power level. On this engine the tune has to match what the lift pump can deliver, because the VP44 injection pump is cooled and lubricated by supply fuel.

Custom tuning on the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The 24-valve's Bosch VP44 is electronically controlled, and tuning works by electronically controlling fueling and timing. The established custom-tune options for this engine pair adjustable power levels with a monitor, so you can see what the truck is doing as you drive. That monitoring matters here. Modules must be matched to lift pump capacity, and a fuel pressure gauge belongs on the truck before the tune does.

What goes wrong

A VP44 fed by a weak lift pump can fail soon after a module goes on. The Turbo Diesel Register's editor lost one on a pump making only 3 psi. Power-package boost elbows set P0234, and some aftermarket boxes set P0335/P0336 crank sensor codes that eventually clear. Stacking more than one product overlaps, so the gains do not add up.

Matching the tune to the truck

  • Standard vs. High Output. The 2001-2002 High Output (NV5600 six-speed only) uses different pumps and injectors than the standard-output engine, so fitment and expected gains differ.
  • Transmission. The 47RE automatic is rated at about 450 lb-ft of input torque and runs out of room first.
  • Use. For towing, a mild tune gives safe gains and better economy. Watch EGT and fuel pressure on gauges either way.

What we carry

Right now this collection lists the HP Tuners MPVI4 interface, the hardware that links HP Tuners' laptop software to the truck. Before you order, confirm HP Tuners covers your year and engine. The fitment checker on the product page is the quickest check, and we will confirm by phone. See all our tuners, or the Cummins hub for fuel system parts.

Fitment and compliance

CARB approval requires each product to be independently tested for emissions output. On a California-registered truck, confirm the CARB EO number for the specific product. The High Output engine was never sold in California. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What does a custom tune change on a VP44 truck?

It changes how the VP44 meters fuel and sets timing, which is how this engine makes more power. A sound custom tune is built around your lift pump, transmission and how you use the truck. It does not fix a weak fuel supply.

Which gauges should I run with a custom tune?

Fuel pressure and EGT. The VP44 is cooled and lubricated by supply fuel, so pressure is your early warning. Keep pre-turbo EGT under 1,250 F, with the probe in the manifold, since a downpipe probe always reads lower.

Does a High Output truck need a different tune?

It can. The 2001-2002 High Output has different pump and injector calibrations than the standard-output engine, so module fitment and expected gains differ. Know which engine you have before you order.
