1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Fuel Injectors

Fuel injectors, nozzles, connector tubes and seal kits for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins. These are mechanical Bosch-style injectors fed by the VP44 pump, and stock calibrations are specific to engine rating and transmission. Order by your truck's rating and gearbox, not just the model year.

Injectors on the 1998.5-2002 RAM 5.9L Cummins

This engine uses Bosch mechanical injectors, a spring-and-nozzle design with no electronics in the injector and no common rail feeding it. Each injector gets its own high-pressure line from the VP44, and common aftermarket replacements use a VCO nozzle. The factory ran separate injector calibrations for the 215 and 235 hp trucks and for the 245 hp High Output, a 2001-2002 option. Connector tubes and feed-tube o-rings are part of every injector job on this engine.

Diagnose before you replace

The well-documented failures on the 24-valve fuel system sit upstream of the injectors. Dead pedal is usually the electronic module on top of the VP44. Hard hot starts, stalling and P0216 trace to the pump and to low supply from the block-mounted lift pump. Put a gauge on the fuel supply and pull codes before you spend money on injectors. 2000-2002 trucks show codes on the odometer with three key cycles in five seconds; 1998.5-1999 trucks need an OBD-II scan tool.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Stock-HP injectors restore factory fueling and are the right choice for a stock truck or a tow rig that's staying that way. Performance sets add fuel, and that's where the supply side matters. Larger injectors raise lift-pump demand, and the factory pump is already marginal once power is added, so do the lift pump first. The injection pump has to keep up too; replacement VP44s should be matched to the injectors and the power goal.

What we carry

XDP new stock-HP injectors: the XD592 for 1998.5-2002, the XD593 for 1998.5-2002 trucks with the five-speed manual, and the XD591 for 2001-2002 trucks with the six-speed manual, plus XD536 black-phosphate injector hold-down bolts. Dynomite Diesel 24v injector sets, nozzle sets, a 200 HP injector set, and connector tubes sold as a set or individually. BD Diesel fuel injector connector tube sets and an injector seal kit. S&S Diesel Motorsport injector feed tubes also show up here; their listing names 2003-2007 trucks, so run the fitment checker before you order them. Browse every injector we stock across platforms.

Fitment notes

Stock injectors are rating-specific. The 215 and 235 hp trucks use one calibration family, and the 245 hp High Output, sold in 2001-2002 only with the NV5600 six-speed, uses another. XDP lists its stock injectors by year and transmission, so match both. The XD536 hold-down bolts are listed for 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins from 1998.5 on. If your truck has had its pump or injectors changed before and you aren't sure what's in it, call with the VIN before you order. More for this engine at the Cummins hub.

Frequently asked questions

Are 24-valve injectors the same on every 1998.5-2002 truck?

No. Stock calibrations differ by rating: the 215 and 235 hp trucks use one, and the 245 hp High Output, a 2001-2002 option with the NV5600, uses another. Order by year and transmission and verify by VIN.

Should I upgrade the lift pump before installing bigger injectors?

Yes. Larger injectors raise fuel demand, and the factory lift pump is already marginal once power is added. A starved VP44 overheats, so do the pump first and the injectors second.

What else should I replace with injectors?

The connector tubes and feed-tube o-rings. They should be replaced along with the injectors, and this collection has connector tube sets from Dynomite Diesel and BD Diesel plus a BD Diesel injector seal kit.
