1998.5-2002 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Air Intake Accessories

Intake accessories for the 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins: sensors and connectors, grid heater parts, gaskets, couplers, clamps and filter care. Small parts carry a lot of weight here. A dirty or failed MAP or intake air temperature sensor can make the engine computer restrict fueling, and the truck slowly loses power.

Intake accessories for the 1998.5-2002 Ram 5.9L Cummins

On the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins, the intake accessories that matter are silicone boots and spring clamps, and MAP and intake temperature sensor service. The engine leans on its intake sensors to decide how much fuel to deliver, reads an accelerator pedal position sensor on its drive-by-wire throttle, and depends on an electric grid heater between the air horn and the intake manifold for cold starts, since it has no glow plugs. This page covers the connectors, sensors, gaskets and hardware that keep all of that working.

What fails and why

Intake sensors get dirty or fail, and a bad MAP or intake air temperature reading makes the computer restrict fueling, so power fades gradually. Rubber intercooler boots crack with age or slip under their clamps and dump boost, which brings low power, smoke, high EGT and a whistle. Grid heater relay circuits age and set P0380 or P0382, and P1291 means the heaters produced no temperature rise. That shows up as hard cold starts and white smoke when cold.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For sensors, connectors and gaskets, replace like for like. Genuine Cummins pigtails and adapters restore the factory connection, and fresh Mahle or Alliant Power gaskets reseal the grid heater whenever the horn comes off. The upgrade side of this page is the plumbing and wiring. Silicone couplers and better clamps address the chronic stock boot leaks, and XDP's heavy-duty relay-to-grid wires and fusible link replace the factory grid heater wiring.

What we carry

  • Genuine Cummins: heater grid 3969987, MAP sensor connector pigtail 6383923 and MAP sensor wiring harness adapter 3104228.
  • XDP sensors and wiring: throttle position sensors XD1004 and XD1005, ambient air temperature sensor XD1006, XD440 heavy-duty relay-to-grid heater wires and a heavy-duty grid heater relay fusible link.
  • Gaskets: Mahle G32749 intake heater grid gasket, MS12435 intake manifold gasket set and 95-3623 engine gasket set, plus the Alliant Power AP0058 intake grid heater gasket set.
  • Boots and clamps: Mishimoto factory-fit boot kit, S&B 4-inch silicone coupler with clamps and BD Diesel high-torque hose clamps.
  • Filter care: S&B Precision II air filter cleaning and oil kit and the Banks Power 42650 pre-filter wrap.

Fitment notes

Year ranges matter on this page. The MAP sensor pigtail is listed for 1998.5-2000 and the harness adapter for 2002 only. The ambient air temperature sensor starts with 2002, and the throttle position sensors cover 1998.5-2004. The Banks wrap is listed only for Banks Ram-Air filters 42158 and 42188. If you are unsure, verify by VIN or call us.

Frequently asked questions

Which MAP sensor connector fits my truck?

The genuine Cummins 6383923 pigtail is listed for 1998.5-2000 trucks, and the 3104228 harness adapter is listed for 2002. If you have a 2001, run your truck through the fitment checker or call before ordering, because neither listing names that year.

Can a bad intake sensor really cost me power?

Yes. A dirty or failed MAP or intake air temperature sensor can make the engine computer restrict fueling. It tends to show up as a gradual loss of power rather than a sudden failure, so it is worth checking before you chase bigger parts.

What does the throttle position sensor do on a 24-valve?

On these trucks it is the accelerator pedal position sensor for the drive-by-wire throttle, often called the APPS or TPS. Its signal also feeds the torque converter lock-up decisions on automatic trucks. The XDP XD1004 and XD1005 are listed for 1998.5-2004.

Do I need new gaskets when I pull the intake horn?

Plan on it. The grid heater sits between the horn and the intake manifold, so removing the horn opens the joints on both sides of it. Mahle and Alliant Power grid heater gaskets are listed for this engine, and the Mahle intake manifold set covers the manifold side.
