Deep transmission pans, a pan gasket and a drain plug for the 1994-1998 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins and the 47RH or 47RE automatic. The one thing to know: transmission service is due every 24,000 miles on a 12-valve, and a deep pan adds fluid capacity to the transmission you are already servicing.

Transmission pans on the 1994-1998 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The automatic behind the 12-valve is the 47RH (hydraulic governor, 1994-1995) or the 47RE (electronic governor pressure control, from 1996). Both are heavy-duty versions of the Chrysler four-speed, built with steel planetaries and extra clutch plates for the 5.9L Cummins. The factory fluid is Mopar ATF+4, and a drain and refill takes about 4 quarts. On 12-valve trucks, transmission service, including the band adjustment, is due every 24,000 miles.

What fails and why

A pan holds fluid, so the real questions are about the fluid. On a fueled truck, the stock single-disc converter and 60-100 psi line pressure slip under load, and burnt fluid is one of the signs. On any truck this age, the cooler lines are the bigger threat to your fluid. The 1994-1996 lines use brittle plastic fittings, and on 1994-1998 trucks the metal lines cross and rub on the bellhousing until one wears through and dumps the ATF. A deep pan does not stop either problem. Replacing the 1994-1996 plastic retainers with Weatherhead fittings or the later metal-clip lines, and sleeving the crossing lines with rubber hose at the bellhousing, does.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If you are resealing the pan at service time, a fresh gasket is all you need. If you want more capacity, a deep pan is part of the common 47RH/RE upgrade path, adding about 2.5 quarts and magnetic plugs alongside a performance valve body and a stronger converter. Depth varies by pan. Mag-Hytec offers a Deep and an Extra Deep version, and the XDP XD450 is an Xtra Deep aluminum pan. Extra fluid is reserve, not a repair: it will not fix a slipping converter or a leaking cooler line.

What we carry

  • Pacific Performance Engineering deep transmission pan, listed for 1989-2009 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins.
  • XDP XD450 Xtra Deep aluminum transmission pan for the 47/48RE.
  • Mag-Hytec 727-D Deep and 727-DD Extra Deep transmission pans.
  • BD Diesel deep sump transmission pan.

  • ATS Diesel Performance replacement drain plug that fits ATS pans and differential covers.

Fitment notes

These pans are for automatic trucks; the NV4500 manual does not use them. Read each listing before you order. The XDP pan is labeled for the 47/48RE, while the Mahle gasket lists both the 47RH and 47RE. The 47RH and 47RE differ in governor and valve-body control, so do not assume a part listed for one fits the other; confirm your year and whether the governor is electronic. 1998 trucks can carry the 12-valve or the 24-valve, so verify by VIN or call us.

Frequently asked questions

How much fluid does a deep pan add?

In the common 47RH/RE upgrade path, a deep pan adds about 2.5 quarts over stock. The exact number depends on the pan, and the Mag-Hytec Extra Deep is the deeper of its two versions. Refill with Mopar ATF+4, the factory spec.

What fluid goes in a 47RH or 47RE, and how often?

Mopar ATF+4 is the factory spec, and a drain and refill takes about 4 quarts. On 12-valve trucks, transmission service, including the band adjustment, is due every 24,000 miles.

Will a deep pan help a transmission that keeps losing fluid?

No. On these trucks a common cause is the cooler lines: brittle plastic fittings on 1994-1996 lines, and metal lines that rub through where they cross at the bellhousing. Fix the lines first, then add capacity if you want it.
