Call or Text (352) 722-5295Internals and coolers for the 1994-1998 Ram 5.9L Cummins
The 47RH and 47RE behind the 5.9L Cummins are heavy-duty 4-speeds with a 450 lb-ft input rating, steel planetaries and extra clutch plates. What holds them back on a fueled truck is the single-disc converter and the 60-100 psi stock line pressure. The usual path is a multi-disc converter first, then a valve body with more line pressure, and on the hardest-working builds, billet internals. The cooling side has its own weak point: on every year here the cooler lines cross and rub on the bellhousing, and 1994-1996 lines also have brittle plastic fittings.
What we carry
- Valve bodies: BD's full manual valve body for 1994-1995 47RH trucks and its 1996-2002 full manual unit, BD's 1996-1998 valve bodies including one with the governor pressure solenoid, and the ATS 47RH racing valve body.
- Billet shafts and internals: input, intermediate and output shafts from BD Diesel and ATS Diesel Performance, plus an ATS billet 2nd-gear accumulator piston.
- Rebuild kits: BD Build-It kits from Stage 1 for stock power through Stage 4, and the ATS 618 47RH/47RE master rebuild kit.
- Governor and lock-up controls: the ATS 47RE governor pressure transducer and solenoid block conversion kit, the ATS Co-Pilot, and BD's Autoloc, Torqloc and 2LOW Unloc.
- Coolers: a Ram-specific cooler, universal coolers and a radiator-and-cooler bundle from Mishimoto, a cooler and line kit from Fleece Performance Engineering, a replacement cooler from CSF and BD's auxiliary cooler.
Fitment notes
Valve bodies and governor parts split at the 47RH/47RE line, so confirm the year and whether your governor is electronic before you order. The Mishimoto Ram cooler and the Fleece kit are listed for 1994-2002 trucks, the CSF cooler for 1995-2002 and the Mishimoto radiator bundle for 1994-1997. Universal coolers aren't built for one truck, so plan the mounting and lines. A 1998 can have the 12-valve or the 24-valve engine. Verify by VIN, or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
Which valve body fits my truck?
It depends on the governor. 1994-1995 trucks have the hydraulically governed 47RH, and BD and ATS both list valve bodies for those years. From about 1996 the 47RE uses electronic governor pressure control, and BD lists 1996-1998 valve bodies for it. Confirm the governor type before you order.
When do billet shafts make sense?
When the transmission is coming apart for a build on a fueled truck. Race 12-valves go as far as a 48RE with billet internals, and BD's Torquemaster 47RE comes with a billet input shaft. If you're rebuilding to stock power, BD's Stage 1 Build-It kit is the simpler route.
My cooler lines leak. Do I need a new cooler?
Not necessarily. The known leak points are the brittle plastic fittings on 1994-1996 lines and the metal lines rubbing on the bellhousing. Weatherhead fittings or later metal-clip lines, plus rubber hose sleeves where the lines cross, are the standard fix. If you want new lines and a cooler together, the Fleece kit includes both.
