Call or Text (352) 722-5295Transmission filters for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins automatic. Change the filter when you service the 47RH or 47RE, which on these 12-valve trucks is every 24,000 miles along with a band adjustment, and refill with Mopar ATF+4, the factory spec.
Transmission filters for the 1994-1998 Ram 5.9L Cummins
The 47RH and 47RE are Chrysler 4-speed overdrive automatics, the 47RH with a hydraulic governor on 1994-1995 trucks and the 47RE with electronic governor control from about 1996. Both take Mopar ATF+4, about 4 quarts on a drain and refill, and on 12-valve trucks the service interval, band adjustment included, is 24,000 miles. Behind the 5.9L Cummins, a filter change belongs in that routine, not on a separate list. Look at the fluid when the pan comes off: on a fueled truck, burnt fluid is one of the signs the stock single-disc converter is slipping.
What we carry
Mag-Hytec's 727 pan filter is listed for 1989-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks and replaces the filter inside the pan. BD Diesel lists a replacement transmission filter and an in-line filter kit, which adds a second filter outside the pan in the cooler circuit. PPE's filter spacer block comes with its O-ring and is listed for 1994-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks; check the product page for the pan and filter setup it is built for.
Fitment notes
These parts are for the automatic trucks; NV4500 manual trucks are serviced with GL-4 gear lube instead. Most filters here are listed across 1994-2007 Cummins trucks, but read the range on each product page. If you've installed a deep pan, confirm which filter and spacer it was designed around before you order. Deep pans add fluid capacity, so plan on more than 4 quarts at refill. Verify by VIN, or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the transmission filter?
Do it with each transmission service. On 12-valve trucks that's every 24,000 miles, with the band adjustment done at the same time. Refill with ATF+4, about 4 quarts on a drain and refill with the stock pan.
What does an in-line transmission filter add?
A second filter outside the pan, in the cooler circuit. BD's in-line kit is listed for 1994-2007 Cummins trucks, and BD's Torquemaster 47RE complete transmission is sold with an auxiliary filter.
Do I need the PPE spacer block?
Only if your pan setup calls for it. It comes with an O-ring and is listed for 1994-2007 5.9L Cummins trucks. Check the deep pan's instructions before you order.
