1989-1993 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Oil System Parts

Engine oil, filters, oil coolers, the oil pump, pan gaskets and drain plugs for the 1989-1993 Dodge Ram with the 5.9L Cummins. The 12-valve holds 12.0 quarts with the filter, and the right viscosity depends on how cold your truck starts. Change it every 6,000 miles or six months, half that under severe use.

The oil system on the 1989-1993 RAM 5.9L Cummins

The first-gen 5.9L Cummins uses a gear-driven oil pump, an oil cooler with its own core gasket, and a screen on the oil pickup tube. The pump and cooler are service parts listed across 1989-2002, so first gens share them with later 5.9L trucks. The pickup screen has a second job on this engine: if the killer dowel pin ever falls out of the front gear housing, the screen keeps it in the bottom of the pan.

Capacity, intervals and viscosity

  • Capacity: 12.0 US quarts with the filter.
  • Above 10°F: SAE 15W-40.
  • 0 to 30°F: SAE 10W-30.
  • Below 0°F without a block heater: SAE 5W-30.
  • Change interval: every 6,000 miles or 6 months in normal use, every 3,000 miles or 3 months in severe use.
  • Reference numbers: Fleetguard LF16035 filter and Mopar 4293859 drain plug for 1989-1993.

What leaks and why

At this age, the oil pan gasket and rear main seal leak on high-mileage engines. Look for oil at the bellhousing seam and drips from the pan rail. The front cover and crank seal weep too, behind the damper and down the front of the block. A reseal with a new pan gasket and a rear seal with a wear sleeve is the standard fix; the seals live in the engine components collection, and the pan gasket is here.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

For hard parts, the genuine Cummins oil pump and oil cooler are the OE path, and the Mishimoto replacement oil cooler is the aftermarket alternative. For oil, the choice is grade and base stock. Most oils here carry the CK-4 rating, in semi-synthetic, synthetic blend and full synthetic, and Lucas offers a high-TBN CI-4 15W-40. Additives are optional: Lucas stabilizers, Hot Shot's TBN Booster and FR3, and XDP X-Factor are there for owners who use them, and Lucas TB Zinc Plus is a break-in additive for a fresh rebuild.

What we carry

Hot Shot's Secret engine oils: Green Diamond in 15W-40 (semi-synthetic and full synthetic), 10W-30 and 5W-40, Blue Diamond 5W-40, Black Diamond Outlaw 10W-30 and 15W-40, and the ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils, plus TBN Booster and FR3 friction reducer. Lucas Oil has 15W-40 CK-4 in standard and synthetic versions, Magnum high-TBN CI-4 15W-40, a synthetic blend 10W-30 CK-4, heavy-duty oil stabilizers and TB Zinc Plus. Filters are the MAHLE OC1001 and the PPE MicroPure XR. Cummins supplies the genuine oil pump and oil cooler, and Mishimoto a replacement oil cooler and a magnetic drain plug. MAHLE adds the OS32139 oil pan gasket and an oil cooler gasket set, XDP an oil pan bolt kit, and WCFab a #10 JIC oil drain block fitting. A Dorman mechanical vacuum pump and an ATS drain plug round out the list.

Fitment notes

Read the year range on every title. The Mishimoto drain plug is listed 1989-1993 and 2002-2013, the MAHLE oil cooler gasket set 1989-1996, the pan gasket 1989-2002 and the Dorman vacuum pump 1989-1991 only. The MAHLE oil pump screen in this list is listed 1994-2002, so it is not a first-gen part. The ATS drain plug is made for ATS pans and differential covers. For oil, match the grade to the chart above by the coldest temperature your truck starts in.

Frequently asked questions

How much oil does a 1989-1993 5.9L Cummins hold?

12.0 US quarts with the filter, which is exactly three one-gallon jugs. Most of the Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil diesel oils here come by the gallon, and the MAHLE OC1001 and PPE MicroPure XR filters are listed for this engine.

What oil weight should a first-gen Cummins run in Florida?

15W-40. The chart calls for it above 10°F, which covers a typical Florida winter. If your truck lives somewhere colder, 10W-30 covers 0 to 30°F, and 5W-30 is the call below 0°F without a block heater.

How often should I change the oil?

Every 6,000 miles or six months in normal use, and every 3,000 miles or three months under severe use, whichever comes first. Swap the filter at every change.
