Call or Text (352) 722-5295Oil filtration on the 1989-1993 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The Cummins 6BT moves its oil with a gear-driven lube pump, runs an engine oil cooler assembly, and relies on the filter to keep that oil clean for the bearings and the solid-lifter valvetrain. The reference filter for this engine is the Fleetguard LF16035. Down in the pan, a screen on the oil pickup tube catches big debris; it is what keeps a fallen killer dowel pin in the bottom of the pan.
What we carry
- PPE 214000767 MicroPure XR engine oil filter, listed for 1989-2024 Cummins engines.
- Mahle OC1001 oil filter, listed for 1989-2023 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins engines.
Both span several Cummins generations, so one part number can cover a first-gen and a newer Ram in the same driveway.
Fitment notes
Both filters are listed from 1989, so they cover every first-gen year, intercooled or not. While the pan is draining, note that the reference drain plug for 1989-1993 is Mopar 4293859. Verify by VIN if your engine has been swapped.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the oil filter on a 1989-1993 Cummins?
At every oil change: 6,000 miles or 6 months in normal service, 3,000 miles or 3 months in severe service. If you are not sure which applies to your truck, the shorter interval is the safe choice.
What is the reference filter for the first-gen 5.9L?
The Fleetguard LF16035 is the filter listed for this engine. The PPE and Mahle filters on this page are both listed for 1989-and-later Cummins fitment, so either one can go on in its place; check the product page details to compare them.
How much oil do I need with a filter change?
12.0 US quarts with the filter. Use 15W-40 above 10°F, 10W-30 from 0 to 30°F, and 5W-30 below 0°F if the truck has no block heater.
