There is only one transmission to shop for here. Every LMM pickup, Work Truck through SLE and SLT, got the six-speed Allison 1000, so the decision is never which gearbox you have, only what the truck is asked to do. The converter multiplies torque off idle, then couples up so the engine drives the gear train directly, and it has to pass everything the engine makes to get there. The Allison is rated at 660 lb-ft of input torque on 2008-2009 trucks and 765 lb-ft from 2010. Pick by workload, not by badge: a Sierra that spends its weekends under a heavy trailer asks something different of a converter than one that is tuned and driven empty.
Why the stock unit gives up
The factory converter is built light for the job it ended up doing. Raise the torque going into it and the stator inside splits, while the soft front cover balloons under pressure. Neither failure stays contained, because the metal that comes off circulates with the fluid and works its way through the clutches and valve body. The Allison protects itself by dropping into limp mode and holding third gear, and it will do that on slip, on heat, or on load alone, long before anything has broken. Tune the engine and leave the TCM alone and you will meet limp mode quickly. Worth knowing, too, that adaptive shift logic masks a converter that is on its way out, so the truck can feel acceptable right up until it is not.
Factory stall or enhanced stall
The converters on this page are listed one of two ways, factory stall or enhanced stall, and that label is the first thing to read. A factory-stall unit keeps the Sierra behaving the way it did new, which is usually what a working truck wants. Enhanced stall is a different coupling characteristic and worth a phone call before you commit, because the right answer depends on your gearing, your tune and your trailer. On capability, the practical ceiling for a 2006-2010 Allison with stock internals runs about 430-450 rwhp and 850-900 lb-ft, and the published upgrade order is TCM calibration first, then a billet-cover multi-disc converter, then the valve body, then a built unit. Buying the converter before the calibration gets that order backwards.
What is on this page
BD Diesel is here with an enhanced-stall converter and the Triple Torque Force. ATS Diesel Performance lists the TripleLok, at factory stall, and the Five Star, built around the Allison LCT1000. The rest of the page is the hardware the swap consumes. Merchant Automotive stocks a converter bolt kit and a housing bolt seal set, and Dorman lists M10-1.50 converter bolts in a three-pack. Those are not filler items; they are what we reach for on the bench. Deep pans, filters, coolers, shafts and the rest of the Allison parts catalog sit in the wider Duramax section.
Before you order
The converters list across the 2001-2016 Allison behind the 6.6L Duramax, so a 2007.5-2010 Sierra HD is inside the range, but two edges matter. A 2007 Sierra HD badged Classic is the previous body with the LBZ in it, and 2011 moved to the LML with its own transmission parts list, so nothing here should be assumed forward of 2010. Complete built transmissions, unlike a bare converter, are ordered as 2WD- or 4WD-specific units and normally carry a core charge, so read the listing if your cart is growing. Whatever goes in, it fills with Dexron-VI. Run your truck through the fitment checker on the product page, or call us with the VIN and we will read it for you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the converter is the problem and not the transmission?
The early signs are a shudder or a slip under load and metal showing up in the fluid. Pull a sample and look at it before you spend anything, because that sample also tells you whether debris has already been pushed through the clutches and valve body. If the truck is sitting in third and will not shift out, the Allison has already gone to limp mode and the converter is one of several things worth inspecting at that point.
Do I have to reuse the original converter bolts?
No, and we would rather you did not. Converter bolts and the housing bolt seals are a small part of the job compared with having the transmission out again, which is why the bolt kit, the seal set and the three-pack of M10-1.50 bolts are stocked alongside the converters. Order them with the converter so the job is not waiting on a parts run.
Will a new converter raise what my Sierra can safely handle?
It raises the weakest link rather than the whole transmission. A stock 2006-2010 unit is practically done around 430-450 rwhp and 850-900 lb-ft, and a billet-cover multi-disc converter takes the first item off that list while the valve body and the internals stay where they were. Paired with TCM calibration it is the step that keeps a towing truck out of limp mode; past that number, the conversation turns into a built transmission.
