Start with soot. A leak at a manifold flange or an up-pipe joint leaves black tracks right at the joint, and the noise shows up when the engine is loaded rather than at idle. Add boost and drive pressure that will not come up the way they used to, and you have the signature of a leak ahead of the turbo rather than a worn turbo. Plenty of these Sierras get quoted a turbo when the actual fault is a flange upstream of it, which is an expensive way to fix a gasket. On an LMM there is a second clue: because the particulate filter reads pressure and temperature downstream, a leak up here can throw those signals off and leave the truck running extra regens for no reason you can see on the gauge cluster.
The two parts that crack
The passenger-side up-pipe is the signature one. Its flex bellows absorbs the movement between a hot engine and a hot turbo, and across the 2001-2016 Duramax family it is the most reported exhaust failure of all, driven by age and heat cycling rather than any particular mileage. Owners also report swapping to up-pipe designs without the bellows, though that is forum practice rather than anything published. The other half is the manifolds themselves. Cast manifolds, a leak path per bank, and gaskets flattened by years of heat cycling: these let go at any age and get progressively worse once they start, usually announcing themselves at the same place in the rev range as a tired turbo.
What you are actually buying
Three honest paths run through this page. Replace in kind with a cast manifold, fresh gaskets and new hardware, and you have factory flow and factory sealing back, which is the right call on a mostly stock Work Truck or SLE. Step up on the manifold side and there are billet and high-flow manifolds with heavier flanges. On the up-pipe side the upgrade is specific and well documented: a heavy-gauge stainless pipe with a welded convolute bellows replacing the thin OEM flex joint that fails, sold for the passenger side, the driver side or both across the 2001-2016 trucks. On an SLT that tows every week, the up-pipe is usually where the money does the most good, because that is the part the whole platform is known for breaking.
Hardware is not an afterthought
Gaskets and bolts decide whether the repair holds. The flange holes are bigger than a lot of aftermarket up-pipe bolts, so either keep your sound OEM hardware or order a bolt kit made for the job instead of using whatever shipped loose in the box. Heat shields are side-specific, and so are manifolds: a driver-side part is not a passenger-side part, and ordering by picture is how people end up waiting on a second shipment with the truck apart.
What we carry
For the manifolds and up-pipes themselves, PPE lists high-flow exhaust manifolds with up-pipes for the 2007.5-2010 trucks, Wehrli Custom Fabrication lists billet Duramax manifolds along with a driver-side up-pipe in 2 inch stainless, gaskets included, that bolts to either an OEM or a WCFab manifold, and BD Diesel lists a driver-side manifold. For sealing, PPE covers manifold gaskets, a two-piece gasket set with oversized ports and side-specific heat shields. The bolt set that holds the manifold to the cylinder head comes from Merchant Automotive, a hardware kit from Dorman, a gasket set from Mahle, and the up-pipe and down-pipe bolt kit from WCFab. For turbo-side work, BD lists a T3-T4 adapter flange and ATS Diesel Performance a 45mm wastegate adapter. Other sections of the exhaust have pages of their own, and Duramax is the hub for everything else on the truck.
Fitment notes
Up-pipe kits exclude the LGH Express and Savana van engine, so treat everything here as pickup hardware. Side-specific parts, heat shields and manifolds both, have to be ordered by side. Verify your truck by VIN with the fitment checker on the product page before you order a set.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace just the passenger side?
You can. Up-pipes are sold passenger side, driver side or as a pair, and manifolds are sold individually too, so a single cracked part does not force a full set. The catch is labor: much of the work to reach one side is already done when you are in there, so if the truck has real miles on it, ask us what the overlap looks like before you order one piece.
Do I reuse my old bolts and gaskets?
Gaskets, never. Bolts, often yes. Aftermarket up-pipe bolts tend to be undersized for the flange holes, so reusing sound OEM hardware is usually the better outcome. If yours are rusted or stretched, order the bolt set or hardware kit rather than mixing in fasteners from the shelf.
The titles say 2001-2016. Is that right for my 2007.5-2010 Sierra?
Yes. Manifolds, up-pipes, gaskets and flange hardware carried across the whole 6.6L run, so wide year ranges in the titles are normal and those parts fit your truck. It is the parts behind the turbo, downpipes in particular, where the 2011 and newer LML split actually matters.
What are the T3-T4 adapter flange and the wastegate adapter for?
Custom turbo work. Those two pieces let a turbo that does not use the factory mounting pattern bolt to these manifolds, and the wastegate adapter gives that setup somewhere to plumb. If you are fixing a leak on a stock-turbo Sierra, you do not need either one.
