2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Coolant Tanks

Coolant tanks for the 2020-2022 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke, mostly for the secondary cooling loop. This engine has two separate cooling systems, each with its own reservoir and fill. The secondary holds about 2.0 gallons and also cools the intercooler, the EGR cooler, the fuel and the transmission fluid, so its tank matters more than it looks.

Coolant tanks on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L has two degas bottles, one for each loop. The primary loop cools the block and heads. The secondary, low-temperature loop serves the air-to-water charge air cooler, the EGR cooler, the fuel cooler and, on 2020-and-newer trucks, the 10R140 transmission cooler mounted beneath the bellhousing. The secondary tank is where that loop is filled and where you check its level. Because the two loops are separate, a coolant service on a Powerstroke is two services, not one, and a tank swap means refilling the loop you opened.

What fails and why

Leaks from the radiator, hoses, water pump and related fittings are the cooling failures that show up on every 6.7L generation, and they get worse with miles and towing hours. The tanks and the hoses that connect to them are part of that plumbing. Watch for coolant loss you can't explain and a sweet smell under the hood. A low secondary tank is easy to miss: when that loop runs short, the intercooler and EGR cooler suffer first, so you see high intake air temperatures and EGR temperature codes while the engine never overheats.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If the secondary tank on your truck is leaking or damaged and you just want it fixed, the Mishimoto MMRT-F2D-11S is a replacement secondary expansion tank listed for 2011-2022 trucks. No Limit Fabrication and WCFab build their own secondary coolant tanks for owners who want a fabricated piece. The WCFab WCF100196 is a complete secondary tank kit, and the WCF100203 pairs a coolant tank with a battery box. Choose a single tank if you are replacing a leaker; choose a kit if you want the extra hardware or the battery box as part of the same job.

Fitment notes

Every tank here is listed across a range that includes 2020-2022, but the ranges differ: the Mishimoto tank ends at 2022, the WCFab kits run 2017-2025 and the No Limit Fabrication tank runs 2011-2026. The WCF100203 includes a battery box, so read the listing for what it replaces before you order. When the new tank goes in, refill with coolant that matches Ford's 2020-and-newer spec, Motorcraft Yellow to WSS-M97B57-A1/A2, and do not mix in other coolant families. Chassis cabs share the engine but are separate products; verify those by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 6.7L Powerstroke have more than one coolant tank?

Yes. The primary and secondary cooling systems each have their own reservoir and fill. The secondary holds about 2.0 gallons, and servicing the coolant on this truck means doing both loops.

Can a low secondary tank cause trouble if the engine isn't running hot?

Yes. The secondary loop feeds the air-to-water intercooler and the EGR cooler, so low coolant there shows up as high intake air temperatures and EGR temperature codes before you ever see an engine overheat. Check that tank level when those symptoms appear.

Will the Mishimoto secondary tank fit my 2022 F-250?

It is listed for 2011-2022 6.7L trucks, so a 2022 F-250 pickup falls inside the range. Confirm by VIN or with the fitment checker, especially on a chassis cab.

What coolant goes in the secondary tank?

Ford's chart calls for Motorcraft Yellow to WSS-M97B57-A1 or -A2 on 2020-and-newer F-250 through F-550 trucks. Use the same coolant that is in the rest of the system and do not mix in Gold or other families.
