Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
This engine runs two cooling loops. The primary loop cools the block and heads and holds about 7.25 to 7.75 gallons. The secondary, low-temperature loop holds about 2.0 gallons and cools the air-to-water charge air cooler, the EGR cooler, the fuel cooler and the transmission fluid cooler. Each loop has its own degas bottle and fill, so a full coolant service is two jobs, and a complete refill of both loops takes roughly 9.25 to 9.75 gallons of mixed coolant. That second loop is why coolant condition on a Powerstroke affects more than engine temperature.
What goes wrong
Most coolant trouble on these trucks comes from three things. The first is mixing: Ford says to fill and top off with Motorcraft Yellow and not to mix in Gold or other coolant families. The second is concentration. Ford's manual wants a 48 to 50 percent mix, which gives a freeze point between -30F and -34F. The third is low level from leaks at the radiator, hoses, water pump and fittings, which get worse with miles and towing hours. Low coolant in the secondary loop starves the intercooler and EGR cooler first, so it shows up as high intake air temps and EGR temperature codes rather than an overheat. Some diesel specialists also recommend periodically checking the nitrite content of 6.7L coolant as part of routine maintenance.
Factory spec vs. aftermarket coolant
Ford's own answer is Motorcraft Yellow, sold as VC-13-G concentrate or VC-13DL-G prediluted. The coolants in this collection come in several chemistries and colors, so read the specification each product lists and compare it to WSS-M97B57 before you buy. If you are topping off, stay with what is already in the truck. If you want to change coolant, plan on draining and refilling both loops rather than adding a jug to one bottle. Pre-mixed products save you the measuring; concentrates have to be mixed to Ford's 48 to 50 percent target before they go in.
What we carry
- Mishimoto Liquid Chill: pre-mixed coolant in yellow and purple, Liquid Chill synthetic coolant (MMRA-LC-FULLF), a pre-mixed synthetic coolant and the Liquid Chill radiator coolant additive.
- Hot Shot's Secret: 150K Mile Extended Life Green, 150,000 Mile Heavy Duty Extended Life Yellow and 750,000 Mile Heavy Duty Ultra Long Life Red, each in a one-gallon jug.
- Lucas Oil: 10640 Super Coolant.
Fitment notes
Coolant is not sold by model year, so fitment here is about chemistry, not part numbers. Every 2020-2022 F-250, F-350 and F-450 falls under Ford's yellow spec, from an XL work truck to a Limited. Follow Ford's chart and the under-hood decal, and check your VIN if you are unsure. If the truck has been serviced somewhere else, find out what went in before you top off, and remember the secondary loop has its own bottle that needs the same coolant.
Frequently asked questions
Can I top off my 2021 F-350 with whatever coolant is on the shelf?
No. Ford calls for Motorcraft Yellow to WSS-M97B57-A1 or -A2 on 2020-and-newer Super Duty trucks and says not to mix in Gold or other families. Top off with the same coolant that is already in the system, or drain and refill both loops if you are switching.
How much coolant does the 2020-2022 6.7L hold?
The primary loop holds about 7.25 to 7.75 gallons and the secondary about 2.0 gallons. Each has its own degas bottle, so buy enough for both if you are doing a full service.
What mix ratio should I run?
Ford's manual says to keep coolant concentration at 48 to 50 percent, which gives a freeze point between -30F and -34F. Pre-mixed coolant is already diluted; concentrate has to be mixed before it goes in.
Should I test my coolant?
It is a good habit. Some diesel specialists recommend checking the nitrite content of 6.7L coolant periodically. A test also tells you whether the concentration is still inside Ford's 48 to 50 percent range.
