Call or Text (352) 722-5295Axles and driveline on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford matched the axle to the job on the fourth-generation Super Duty, and the 6.7L Powerstroke trucks show it. A standard F-250 runs the Ford 10.5-inch Sterling rear axle with a 12-bolt cover and 35-spline full-float shafts. Order an F-250 with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow package or the Tremor package, or buy an F-350 single-rear-wheel truck, and you get the Dana M275 instead: a 10.8-inch ring gear, a 14-bolt cover and 36-spline shafts. F-350 duallys and F-450 pickups step up to the Dana M300 with an 11.8-inch ring gear, 4.5-inch axle tubes and 37-spline shafts. Up front, 4x4 trucks use a Dana Super 60 and 2WD trucks use Ford's Twin I-Beam independent front suspension. Diesel axle ratios in Ford's 2020 towing guide run 3.31 or 3.55 on the F-250 and F-350 SRW, 3.55 or 4.10 on the F-350 DRW and 4.30 on the F-450. Tremor trucks add an electronic locking rear differential and a Dana limited-slip front.
What fails and why
Heat is the everyday enemy back here. Banks builds its Ram-Air covers for the Sterling 10.5 and the Dana M275 on the premise that a flat factory cover runs hotter under tow, and axle lube temperature is what drives gear wear. The warning sign shows up at the drain: dark, burnt-smelling gear oil. Ford's 2022 maintenance schedule calls for differential lube every 150,000 miles in normal service but every 60,000 miles under severe duty. If you tow heavy, plan on the shorter number.
Two recalls touch this system. NHTSA 21V536 covers certain 2020-2021 F-350 pickups with the 6.7L and the Dana M275 rear axle whose housings may not support the truck's load and could deform, which in the worst case can lead to driveshaft separation. Driveline vibration or a visibly bent housing are the signs. On 2021 and 2022 F-350 and F-450 duallys, NHTSA 21V390 and 23V758 cover front wheel hub extender nuts that were not attached or tightened correctly. Both are dealer repairs, so run your VIN through Ford before you start ordering parts.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock-style service is simple: drain, clean, a new cover gasket, fresh oil of the correct grade and, on limited-slip axles, Ford's XL-3 friction modifier. Ford's 2021 owner's manual lists SAE 75W-85 synthetic hypoid oil for the Sterling 10.5 and 75W-140 for the M275 and M300, with 7.1 fluid ounces of XL-3 added on limited-slip refills. The upgrade is a heavier cover. PPE builds heavy-duty cast aluminum covers, AFE sells Street Series and Pro Series versions, and the Banks Ram-Air cover is built around keeping gear oil cooler under tow.
What we carry
For covers, we stock PPE heavy-duty cast aluminum covers for the Sterling 12-bolt, the Dana M275 and M300 14-bolt and the Dana 50/60 10-bolt front, AFE Street Series and Pro Series front and rear covers, Mag-Hytec covers for the Dana 60 front and the SRW 14-bolt rear, SPE Motorsport covers for the Dana 60 front and the Sterling 10.25/10.5 rear, and the Banks Power Ram-Air differential cover kit. Mahle cover gaskets and an ATS Diesel Performance drain plug for ATS pans and covers round out the hardware. For fluid, pick from Hot Shot's Secret Adrenaline and Blue Diamond synthetic gear oils, Lucas Oil synthetic and heavy-duty gear oils, Royal Purple Max-Gear 75W-140 and Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier.
Fitment notes
The cover tells you which axle you have. Twelve bolts means the Sterling 10.5. Fourteen bolts means a Dana: the M275 on an SRW truck, the larger 11.8-inch M300 on a dually or F-450. Because an F-250 can carry either the Sterling or the M275 depending on the tow package, count bolts before you buy a cover, gasket or gear oil. Front covers only apply to 4x4 trucks with the Dana Super 60; 2WD trucks use Twin I-Beam, and no front axle, hub or steering part crosses between the two. Many covers here list 2017-and-up fitment, which includes your 2020-2022 truck, but Ford moved axles around by package starting in 2023, so do not assume a newer truck's axle matches yours. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Which rear axle does my F-250 have?
A standard 2020-2022 F-250 uses the Ford 10.5-inch Sterling with a 12-bolt cover. F-250s built with the High-Capacity Trailer Tow package or the Tremor package get the Dana M275 with a 14-bolt cover. Count the bolts on the cover, or call us with your VIN.
How often should I change the gear oil?
Ford's 2022 schedule lists differential lube at 150,000 miles for normal duty and 60,000 miles for severe duty. If the truck regularly pulls a camper, a horse trailer or a gooseneck, use the severe number. Dark, burnt-smelling oil at the drain says the axle has been running hot.
Do I need friction modifier?
On a limited-slip axle, yes. Ford's owner's manual calls for 7.1 fluid ounces of Motorcraft XL-3 on limited-slip rear axle refills, and we carry it here. If you are not sure what differential your truck has, call us with the VIN and we will look it up.
Is my F-350 part of the axle housing recall?
NHTSA 21V536 covers certain 2020-2021 F-350 pickups with the 6.7L diesel and the Dana M275 rear axle. Dealers inspect the housing and repair or replace it. Check your VIN with Ford before you put new parts on that axle.
