Ford's 2021 owner's manual splits the rear axles by grade. The 10.5-inch Sterling under a standard F-250 takes Motorcraft SAE 75W-85 synthetic hypoid oil, roughly 3.3 to 3.5 quarts with the electronic locker and 3.5 to 3.6 quarts without. The Dana M275 on the F-350 SRW and on tow-package or Tremor F-250s takes 75W-140 at 3.6 quarts. The M300 under duallys and the F-450 takes 75W-140 at 3.78 quarts. Limited-slip refills get 7.1 fluid ounces of Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier. Dealer-grade service on any Powerstroke Super Duty of these years follows that same recipe.
When to change it
Ford's 2022 maintenance schedule lists differential lube at 150,000 miles for normal duty and 60,000 miles for severe duty. Heat is what shortens gear oil life back here. Banks builds cooling covers for the Sterling and the M275 because flat factory covers run hotter under tow, and axle lube temperature is the wear driver. Dark, burnt-smelling oil at the drain is the sign the axle has been working hard.

Fitment notes
Count the bolts on your rear cover before you buy fluid: 12 bolts is the Sterling 10.5, 14 is a Dana. An F-250 can carry either one, depending on the tow package. The ATS plug is listed for ATS pans and covers, so confirm your cover takes it before you order. Verify by VIN if you are unsure what is on the truck.
