2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Transmission Pans

Transmission pans, a pan gasket and a drain plug for the 6R140 TorqShift in the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke. If you tow hard, know that overheating under heavy load is a documented 6R140 complaint, and deep pans are among the usual service parts for this transmission.

Transmission pans on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6R140 is the six-speed automatic behind every 6.7L Powerstroke from 2011 through 2019. It has an aluminum case, weighs about 325 lb dry and holds roughly 17.4 to 18.5 quarts of MERCON LV, depending on the source. The filter is a Motorcraft FT187, and Ford's fluid and filter interval is 150,000 miles. Deep pans, torque converters and valve-body parts are the usual service and upgrade parts for this transmission.

What fails and why

The pan itself is not a documented failure point. Fluid and heat are what matter. Overheating under heavy towing, from limited stock cooling and converter slip, is a documented 6R140 complaint. The symptoms are trans over-temp warnings, a burnt fluid smell and limp mode on grades.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If you only need to reseal the factory pan, the MAHLE gasket covers it. A deep cast pan is the upgrade: it is built to hold extra fluid, so check each listing for the added capacity. For sustained towing, the documented cooling upgrade is an auxiliary transmission cooler plumbed in series with the stock liquid-to-liquid cooler. A deep pan and a cooler do different jobs.

Fitment notes

Every pan here is listed for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks with the 6R140. The 2020 and newer Super Duty uses the 10R140 ten-speed and a different pan. Refill with MERCON LV; the 10R140 uses MERCON ULV, and the two should not be crossed. The ATS drain plug is made for ATS pans and differential covers, so match it to an ATS part.

Frequently asked questions

What fluid goes in after a 6R140 pan swap?

MERCON LV. The 2020-and-newer 10R140 uses MERCON ULV, and the two should not be crossed. Factory capacity is about 17.4 to 18.5 quarts depending on the source, and a deep pan adds to that, so fill and check the level per the pan maker's instructions.

Does a deep pan replace a transmission cooler?

No. A deep pan holds extra fluid, but the documented upgrade for sustained towing heat is an auxiliary transmission cooler in series with the stock liquid-to-liquid cooler. If you tow heavy and see over-temp warnings, look at both.

Will these pans fit a 2020 or newer Super Duty?

No. 2020 and newer 6.7L trucks use the 10R140 ten-speed. The pans here are catalogued for 2011-2019 trucks with the 6R140.
