2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Tools

This is the tool collection for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke. It holds the shop gear that makes service on this engine go smoother, from boost leak testing to thread chasing. The one thing to know: a stuck fan clutch on this truck can only be confirmed with a scan tool that reads fan duty cycle and fan speed.

Tools for the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 2017-2019 F-250, F-350 and F-450 are the first years of the fourth-generation Super Duty. The 6.7L Powerstroke in them is a 90-degree V8 with reverse-flow heads, which puts the Garrett variable-geometry turbo in the valley between the banks. Most routine service on it is ordinary hand-tool work. The crankcase ventilation separator sits on the driver-side valve cover, and both fuel filters, the primary in the frame-mounted fuel conditioning module and the secondary on the engine, come off with ordinary hand tools. The tool list only gets specific around the fan clutch, fuel-tank vent service and diagnostics.

The jobs that set the tool list

Three service jobs decide what belongs on the bench for this truck.

  • Fan clutch. Removal takes a 47 mm wrench and a pulley holder. The blades are sharp, and the fan has to be separated from the clutch once the assembly is off the engine.
  • Fuel-tank vent service. Ford's TSB 18-2356 calls for a 3/8-inch drive 13 mm deep socket, 15 mm and 18 mm sockets, a 15 mm wrench and a torque wrench.
  • Fuel-filter priming. After a filter change, cycle the key to RUN and wait for the lift pump to stop, about 10 to 15 seconds. Do that 10 to 12 times before you crank. No tool required, just patience.

Diagnose before you buy parts

A stuck fan clutch on this engine can only be confirmed with a scan tool that reads cooling-fan duty cycle, actual fan speed and desired fan speed. You can't settle it by feel, and a clutch bought on a guess may not fix anything. An OBD-II monitor that reads and clears codes can double as your day-to-day diagnostic tool, showing rail pressure, fan speed and transmission temperature. On the intake side, charge air runs through an engine-mounted air-to-water charge air cooler instead of a front-mounted intercooler, and a boost tester lets you pressurize that path from the compressor inlet to check it for leaks.

Truck-specific tools vs. shop equipment

This collection has two layers. The first is gear made for jobs on this truck: the PPE oil filter socket, the SPE track bar bushing tools and the boost tester with its inlet adapters. The second is equipment that makes every job cleaner: thread chasers, a tool tray, line tools and steel benches. If you handle oil changes and filters in the driveway, the first layer covers you. If you are building out a garage to keep a Super Duty working, the benches and chasers earn their floor space.

What we carry

Here is what is in this collection, by brand:

  • Pacific Performance Engineering: a 93 mm billet aluminum engine oil filter socket listed for 2011-2026 6.7L Power Stroke and 2020-2025 6.6L Duramax.
  • Calibrated Power Solutions: the Stealth Boost Tester with HD regulator, the 1102F011 compressor inlet adapter listed for 2011-2024 6.7L Powerstroke, and a second inlet adapter for S300, S400, S400R and S500 turbos.
  • SPE Motorsport: a track bar bushing removal tool and a track bar bushing and removal tool kit, both listed for 2005-2025 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Power Stroke trucks.
  • XDP: thread cleaning chasers in M8x1.25, M12x1.5, M12x1.75 and M16x2.0 for cleaning up threads before a fastener goes back in at torque.
  • Merchant Automotive: a right-angle grease gun adapter and a quick disconnect tool kit.
  • Wehrli Custom Fabrication: modular steel work benches in 32 x 48, 32 x 72 and 32 x 90 inch sizes.
  • S&B: a flexible silicone tool tray that keeps sockets and bolts from rolling off a fender.
  • Air Lift: an air line hose cutter for clean, square cuts in air line.

Fitment notes

Tools carry across model years better than engine parts, and most listings say so in the title: the PPE socket runs 2011-2026 and the SPE bushing tools 2005-2025. Read each one anyway. The 2020 refresh changed a lot on the 6.7L, including moving the lift pump from the frame-mounted module into the fuel tank, so a procedure written for 2017-2019 is not automatically right for a 2020 truck. Chassis cabs are the other split. F-350, F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs run a 330 hp calibration with a ball-bearing Garrett GT3582V turbo, while pickups use the GT3788V, so confirm which turbo you have before ordering a compressor inlet adapter. The S300/S400/S400R/S500 adapter is for those turbo frames, not the factory Garrett. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to pull the fan clutch on a 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke?

A 47 mm wrench and a pulley holder. Wear gloves, because the fan blades are sharp, and plan to separate the fan from the clutch once the assembly is out. Before you buy a new clutch, confirm the old one is stuck with a scan tool that reads fan duty cycle, fan speed and desired fan speed.

How do I prime the fuel system after changing filters?

Turn the key to RUN and let the lift pump run until it stops, about 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat that 10 to 12 times, then crank. On 2017-2019 trucks the lift pump sits in the frame-mounted Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module along with the primary filter and water separator.

Which boost tester adapter fits my truck?

The Calibrated Power Solutions 1102F011 compressor inlet adapter is listed for 2011-2024 6.7L Powerstroke and pairs with the Stealth Boost Tester HD regulator. The S300/S400/S400R/S500 adapter is only for trucks running one of those turbos. Chassis cabs use a different factory turbo than pickups, so look at what is on your truck before you order.

What sockets does the fuel-tank vent TSB call for?

TSB 18-2356 lists a 3/8-inch drive 13 mm deep socket, 15 mm and 18 mm sockets, a 15 mm wrench and a torque wrench. None of that is special-order; it is a standard metric set plus a torque wrench. Follow the bulletin itself for the procedure and torque values.

Will these tools work on my 2020 or newer Super Duty?

Many will. The PPE oil filter socket is listed through 2026 and the SPE track bar bushing tools through 2025, and bench gear like the XDP chasers, WCFab benches and S&B tray is not tied to any one truck. Procedures are a different story: the 2020 engine moved the lift pump into the tank, so use the procedure for your model year.
