Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel tanks on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Here is how Ford sized the diesel tank on this generation: 29 gallons on the 142-inch and 148-inch wheelbases (Regular Cab 8-foot box and SuperCab 6.75-foot box), a 48-gallon midship tank on the 176-inch Crew Cab 8-foot box, and 34 gallons on most other configurations. Ford advertised up to 48 gallons for 2019. The FX4 Off-Road package adds a fuel tank skid plate. Fuel leaves the tank for the frame-mounted DFCM, which holds the lift pump, primary filter and water separator on 2017-2019 trucks; Ford moved the lift pump into the tank for 2020. The 6.7L Powerstroke is certified for ULSD and biodiesel blends up to B20.
What goes wrong with the tank
Two tank issues are documented on these trucks. First, 2019 Crew Cabs on the 176-inch wheelbase with the 48-gallon tank, built from June 24 through August 31, 2018, can whistle under the left side during fueling, acceleration or braking at three-quarters of a tank or lower. Ford's fix is TSB 18-2356, a fresh-air vent tube cap, part HC3Z-9A089-A. Second, water in the tank feeds microbial growth that leaves black, scummy residue plugging the fuel filters, with dark hazy fuel, power loss and smoke. The fix is a biocide plus a cleaner, followed by a filter change.
The tank also comes into play after a CP4.2 high-pressure pump failure. That repair is rarely pump-only; along with the pumps, injectors and fuel lines, it includes removing and cleaning the tank.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If the factory tank is damaged, or you want more range between fuel stops, a replacement tank is the straightforward fix. The S&B tanks replace the factory tank rather than adding a second one, so the bed stays free. On a short-box Crew Cab the 60-gallon S&B is a big step up from the factory tank, and on a long-box Crew Cab the 68-gallon S&B adds 20 gallons over the 48-gallon midship tank. Check the product page for what transfers over from the factory tank before you plan the install.
What we carry
- S&B 10-1004 60 Gallon Replacement Fuel Tank, listed for 2017-2024 6.7L Powerstroke Crew Cab short box (CCSB)
- S&B 10-1008 68 Gallon Replacement Fuel Tank, listed for 2017-2025 6.7L Powerstroke Crew Cab long box (CCLB)
Fitment notes
Crew Cab short box means the 6.75-foot bed on the 159.8-inch wheelbase. Crew Cab long box means the 8-foot bed on the 176-inch wheelbase. Regular Cab and SuperCab trucks are not covered by these two listings. Tank size decides sump and tank parts, so if you run an aftermarket sump, plan it together with the tank. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker on the product page.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the factory fuel tank on my 2017-2019 Super Duty?
It depends on wheelbase and cab. Trucks on the 142-inch and 148-inch wheelbases got 29 gallons, the 176-inch Crew Cab 8-foot box got a 48-gallon midship tank, and most others got 34 gallons.
Which S&B tank fits my truck?
The 10-1004 60-gallon tank is listed for the Crew Cab short box, and the 10-1008 68-gallon tank for the Crew Cab long box. Both are listed for the 6.7L Powerstroke, and neither is listed for Regular Cab or SuperCab trucks.
My 2019 Crew Cab whistles near the fuel tank. Is the tank bad?
Check your build date first. 2019 Crew Cabs on the 176-inch wheelbase with the 48-gallon tank built June 24 through August 31, 2018 can whistle under the left side, and Ford's TSB 18-2356 fixes it with a fresh-air vent tube cap rather than a new tank.
What causes black sludge in my fuel filter?
Water in the tank lets microbes grow, and the result is black, scummy residue that plugs the filters. Treat the fuel with a biocide and a cleaner, then change the filters.
