On these trucks the low-pressure side starts at the tank. An electric lift pump inside the frame-mounted Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module (DFCM) draws fuel from the tank, pushes it through a 10-micron primary filter and water separator, then on to the 4-micron secondary filter on the engine. From there a Bosch CP4.2 feeds twin rails at up to roughly 30,000 psi. Ford moved the lift pump into the tank for 2020, so 2017-2019 trucks are the last of the external DFCM layout, and lift pump, DFCM and filter housing parts split at 2011-2019 versus 2020 and later.
A sump changes where fuel leaves the tank. It installs in the tank floor and gives the supply line a pickup at the bottom. XDP builds a one-hole design and a one-hole design with a fuel return; BD Diesel's Flow-Max sump and G&R Diesel's bottom sump with integrated return are the other choices.
What goes wrong in this fuel system
The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump defines the fuel-system reputation of the 6.7L Powerstroke. On low-lubricity ULSD its internal cam follower can lose contact with the cam lobe and wear, sending metal into the rails, injectors and lines. Warning signs include hard or long cranking, P0087 or P0088 rail-pressure codes and metallic glitter in the fuel filters. The repair is rarely pump-only: it replaces the fuel pump, the injection pump, all eight injectors and every fuel line, and it includes removing and cleaning the tank. A sump does not change that pump, so do not buy one as CP4.2 insurance.
Two other problems start at the tank. Water in the fuel feeds microbial growth that leaves black, scummy residue on the filters, with dark hazy fuel and power loss. And a leak anywhere in the supply side can let the system lose prime, which shows up as a long crank when the engine is warm. After any tank or sump work, check every connection.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A sump is an upgrade part, not a factory service item, and it makes sense when you are reworking how the truck draws fuel from the tank. Pick the design by the plumbing you plan. The XDP XD182 is a single-hole sump. The XDP XD243 and the G&R Diesel GRD00153 add a fuel return in the same fitting. BD Diesel's 1050330 is part of its Flow-Max line. Whatever you pick, the basics still carry the most weight: fuel filter service with the Motorcraft FD-4625AA kit at 15,000 to 22,500 miles, draining the water separator, and a lubricity additive on every tank for the CP4.2.
What we carry
- XDP MFG XD182 Fuel Tank Sump, one-hole design
- XDP MFG XD243 Fuel Tank Sump, one-hole design with fuel return
- BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max Fuel Tank Sump
- G&R Diesel GRD00153 Bottom Sump with integrated return
Fitment notes
Tank size depends on wheelbase and cab: 29 gallons on the 142-inch and 148-inch wheelbases, a 48-gallon midship tank on the 176-inch Crew Cab 8-foot box, and 34 gallons on most others. Sump and tank parts must match the tank, so know which one is under your truck before you order. Fuel filters for 2017-2019 use the FD-4625AA kit, not the 2011-2016 FD-4615, and the housings differ. Frequently asked questions
What does a fuel tank sump do?
It adds a draw point in the floor of the tank so the supply line pulls from the bottom. Some designs, like the XDP XD243 and the G&R Diesel GRD00153, also put a fuel return in the same fitting.
Will a sump protect my CP4.2 pump?
No. CP4.2 failure on the 6.7L comes from cam-follower wear on low-lubricity ULSD, and a sump does not change the pump. The prevention most sources recommend is a lubricity additive on every tank, along with fuel filter service on schedule.
Is the lift pump in the tank on a 2017-2019?
No. On 2011-2019 trucks the electric lift pump sits in the frame-mounted DFCM with the primary filter and water separator. Ford moved it into the tank for 2020, so lift pump and filter housing parts are split 2011-2019 versus 2020 and later.
Does my tank size matter when I pick a sump?
Yes. Ford used 29, 34 and 48 gallon tanks on 2017-2019 trucks depending on wheelbase and cab, and sump parts must match the tank. Confirm your tank before ordering and read the fitment notes on the product page.
