2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Coolant Tanks

Degas and expansion tanks for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke, from Mishimoto, Dorman, WCFab and No Limit Fabrication. These trucks carry two plastic degas tanks, one for each cooling loop, and both get brittle with heat cycles. If you're chasing slow coolant loss, start here.

Coolant tanks on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

The 6.7L Powerstroke runs two independent cooling loops, and each one has its own degas bottle. The primary tank serves the high-temperature loop that cools the block, heads, engine oil cooler, turbo, heater core and EGR cooler. The secondary tank serves the low-temperature loop for the air-to-water charge air cooler, fuel cooler and transmission oil cooler. They are separate parts for separate systems, which matters when you order.

What fails and why

Ford built the 2011-2019 tanks from plastic. Heat cycle after heat cycle, that plastic turns brittle and starts to crack or weep at the seams. The signs are slow coolant loss, a crusty residue on the tank and low-coolant warnings. Because it's an age and heat-cycle problem, it typically shows up after the warranty is gone. Both tanks are the same material and have seen the same heat, so when one starts weeping, give the other a close look.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

A factory-style replacement like Dorman's 603-887 reservoir is a direct fix for 2017-2019 trucks and puts things back the way Ford built them. The upgrade route is aluminum. Mishimoto builds a kit for 2011-2019 trucks that replaces both plastic tanks with welded aluminum tanks fitted with sight glasses and internal baffles. Fabricated secondary tanks and tank kits from WCFab and No Limit Fabrication are another way to replace the factory secondary bottle, and WCFab's kit with a battery box pairs the tank with a battery box in one package.

What we carry

  • Mishimoto: MMRT-F2D-11P aluminum primary degas tank, MMRT-F2D-11S secondary expansion tank, and the MMRT-F2D-11K expansion tank kit.
  • Dorman: 603-887 engine coolant reservoir for 2017-2019 trucks.
  • WCFab: WCF100196 secondary coolant tank kit and WCF100203 coolant tank kit with battery box.
  • No Limit Fabrication: secondary coolant tank.

Fitment notes

Order by loop: a primary tank won't replace a secondary, and kits differ in what they include, so read each listing. Year ranges vary. The Dorman reservoir is listed for 2017-2019 only, the WCFab kits for 2017-2025, Mishimoto's kit and primary tank for 2011-2019, its secondary tank for 2011-2022, and the No Limit tank for 2011-2026. When the new tank is in, refill with the same coolant type already in the system and never mix types.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my degas tank is leaking?

Look for slow coolant loss, crusty residue on the tank body or along its seams, and low-coolant warnings on the dash. The plastic tanks on 2011-2019 trucks get brittle from heat cycles and weep or crack at the seams.

Do I have to replace both tanks at once?

No, but both are the same plastic with the same miles on them. Mishimoto's aluminum kit is built to replace both together, and its primary degas tank and secondary expansion tank are also sold on their own if only one is leaking.

What does an aluminum tank fix that a new plastic one doesn't?

It takes brittle plastic out of the system. Mishimoto's tanks are welded aluminum, with sight glasses for checking the level at a glance and internal baffles. A new factory-style tank works fine, but it's built the way the original was.
